McMaster gave all he had, says coach

Local athlete Kyron McMaster competing at the Paris Olympic Games.

Kyron McMaster completed his second Olympic journey with a season-best time of 47.79 seconds in the 400m hurdles final, securing fifth place at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The event took place at the iconic Stade de France on August 9, amidst the roaring support of 80,000 spectators and countless fans back home.

“Kyron gave us all he had, and that’s all you can ask for at the end of the day. He went out there and gave us 110% and left it on the line, and we’re proud,” reflected Coach Gary Evans.

Despite not securing a podium finish, the mood within Kyron’s camp remains optimistic. “We didn’t get the results we wanted, but we’re going to chase the Diamond League—there’s still more to 2024—and then we’ll prepare for the World Championships next year,” Evans added.

McMaster’s participation in the Paris Olympics was a significant event for the BVI, as businesses across the territory temporarily closed during his race, uniting to support the renowned athlete. His journey to Paris was closely followed and celebrated, especially given his status as a silver medalist in the World Athletics Championships and a two-time Commonwealth Games champion.

Ranked fourth in the world among 400m hurdlers, McMaster faced a challenging season marked by injuries. His preparation involved intensive collaboration with his coaching team and physiotherapist Colin Turner, focusing on executing a strong performance through each round leading up to the finals.

McMaster’s second appearance in an Olympic final is a testament to his dedication and showcases his role as a trailblazing ambassador for the BVI on the global sports stage.

Kyron did a lot for the BVI no doubt. However, his performance in the Olympic final was disappointing. The whole of the BVI was expecting a medal. In the 2020 Olympics, his time was 47.08 placing him in fourth place. This year he placed fifth with a time of 48.76. Instead of him improving, he went backwards.

The next Olympics is in four years and Kyron will be older, almost 30yrs. I hope for his sake he retires from the sport as he will be competing against younger legs.

Thanks for putting the BVI on the world stage in track and field. However, truth must be told.

How much buckets can you jump over? youall like to sit on your phone and judge. When them atheletes have to go through so much, injuries, emotional stuff and give up so much so people like you can sit on your bed and your couch and comment based on what you can see. Get up and do better than him

I am proud of the efforts in the Olympic games by Mr. McMaster and all the other athletes. Rather than only hearing of the Big Island names, it was refreshing to hear my country’s name mentioned on the world stage. To see our athletes being given the “preferred” lanes because of their proven excellence. Revel in your efforts, swell up your chest big big.

  6. ITS NOT NICE ) @ COME NOW says:

it’s how I think , PED has been around even before he was born, and a lot of POPULAR, athletes have been caught and disqualified , however some are still able to beat the tests . AND nowhere I ever say anything to disrespect KYRON and I do believe that he will get better / but the TRUTH has to be told and he has a right to know . if you saw some of the races and how some athletes are pulling away at the end of the races , it just don’t look natural / that all am saying ( no offence intended

Congratulations Kyron! You did great. People please be mindful what you do to others and say about them. This young man ran injured, something nost of us cannot do. Try walking on a leg thats injured much less run at full speed with winds lashing you all over, he did that. Can you? This young man is so polite, humble, gracious and godfearing. Those of us with some semblance if common sense knows Nr McMaster did his best, its just that the other 3 or 4 athletes ran faster, quicker and uninjured and was able to place before him. I pray that Kyron will continue to do his best and enjoy this gift given by our Lord and Saviour and run every
race like its his last. He continues to put his best foot forward and may he continue to stay focus at the task at hand and never give heed to persons whose only mission is to undermine the greatness of others or pull persons down to their level of gutter. May God bless Mr Kyron McMaster, MBE and these beautiful Virgin Islands we all call home.
