McMaster grabs third place at Oslo Diamond League
The BVI’s Kyron McMaster managed a third-place finish in the men’s 400m hurdles event with a season’s best time of 48.49 seconds at the Diamond League meet in Oslo yesterday.
The event was dominated by Alison dos Santos from Brazil, who clocked a world lead time of 46.63 seconds, with Norway’s Karsten Warholm finishing second in a season’s best of 46.70 seconds.
The Brazilian clocked the ninth-fastest time in history and the fastest time ever recorded this early in a year to best Warholm on home soil.
Dos Santos, the 2022 World champion and third-fastest man in history, passed Warholm, the reigning Olympic and world champion and world record holder, after Warholm clipped the last hurdle.
The closely fought 400m hurdles added another chapter to arguably one of the most exciting event in track and field in recent years.
McMaster won back-to-back Diamond League titles in 2017 and 2018 before making a stunning return to world-beating form when he claimed the silver medal at last summer’s World Athletics Championships in Budapest.
He followed that with a stunning victory when he pulled off a classic photo finish to best the aforementioned Norwegian world record holder at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Zurich last year.
The Wanda Diamond League is the premier one-day meeting series in athletics. It comprises 15 of the most prestigious events in global track and field. Athletes compete for points at the 14 series meetings in a bid to qualify for the two-day Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels on September 13 and 14.
