Misconception! Police Bill does not authorise home entry without warrants
Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has sought to dispel public misconceptions surrounding the controversial Police Amendment Bill, pointing out that the legislation does not authorise law enforcement officials to enter homes without warrants.
Dr Wheatley made the comments during a press conference where he addressed several national issues.
“There’s a misconception that somehow or the other we were authorising the police to go into a person’s home without warrants. That’s definitely not the case. That was not in the bill,” he clarified.
The Premier highlighted key amendments in the bill focusing on balancing police powers with safeguarding individual rights. These include provisions for covert operations, surveillance measures, and controlled deliveries, all of which require proper judicial oversight.
“We put some mechanisms in place to ensure that there are proper checks and balances, such as obtaining warrants from a high court judge for surveillance activities,” he told reporters.
Additionally, Dr Wheatley noted plans to return to the House of Assembly with further amendments to distinguish between intrusive and direct surveillance.
The Police Amendment Bill was a topic of robust debate in the territory, with some members of the public expressing concern over potential overreach by law enforcement. Dr Wheatley reassured residents that the bill addresses crime effectively while respecting constitutional rights.
The Premier also emphasised the government’s commitment to ongoing legislative reforms to enhance public safety. “We continue to strategise on ways in which we can confront this challenge in the community of crime. And that includes strengthening our legislation, as we recently did in the House of Assembly with the Police Amendment Act and also the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Bill,” he said.
He further noted that public engagement and understanding remain a priority as the government works to address crime in the territory. “The public has a role to play, so if you see something, say something,” the Premier urged.

Dear Mr Wheatley. You have our permission to go into any home in the VI where you think there are guns, ammunition, drugs, murderers, criminals. If when you do so and there is none of those things be polite say thank you and leave. If there are those things, make sure you all do your homework and get charges to stick and get these people in prison. Do the same with cars and stop all scooter riders (there is reason to arrest every single one that does not have a helmet and then search them and the bike at the same time.) Stop and search every boat coming in to the VI, but in particular the ones that forego the usual arrangement of going to the ports to check in legally. Even if it is your friends doing the smuggling of the drugs, guns, money and strippers. You can stop this if you want. You just may catch some of your friends and colleqgues while you are doing it. Time to clean things up and let those type of friends go. Yours, The People of the VI.
P.S Beware those political colleagues amongst you that think they should not have to undergo the usual screening procedures at the airport.
The reason why crime has increased is because the sentencing for those crimes has not increased.CHECK TCI new laws for one ammunition, twelve years imprisonment. We keep hearing so many illegal firearms ,ammunition and drugs and we NEVER hear about the punishments.Department of Justice is at it’s lowest achievement.
