Mission accomplished! Funds raised to save Dameon Percival’s home

Former Director of the Taxi & Livery Commission, Dameon Percival.

Less than 24 hours after a public appeal was made for funds, organisers have raised thousands of dollars to prevent the bank from selling the home of radio personality and former Director of the Taxi & Livery Commission, Dameon Percival.

Roughly $30,000 was needed to prevent the National Bank from putting up the property up for sale this week.

Percival is a co-host of the Morning Braff radio show on Tola Radio and is known for being an unapologetic critic of government officials. After the appeal was made, the Morning Braff radio show held a telethon yesterday to raise the funds. By the end of the radio show, the public had pledged some $30,000.

Cindy Rosan, who made the public appeal, said individuals from several sectors of the community donated funds.

Percival said he is extremely grateful to everyone who donated to save his home and added that political victimization is the reason he’s been without steady employment.

The outspoken talk show host said he’s tried to work in several sectors but has faced challenges because political leaders gave businesses specific instructions to keep him unemployed.

“I have even gone to do construction and I’ve worked on jobs that were being paid for by government contracts and when the government members come around, the person (boss) would come to me the next day and say it would be easier to just pay me than to give me work because the government official say it’s either I’m off the job or they won’t give the company anything else,” Percival explained.

“This is the reality, people come and say a lot of things and they don’t know. They say I need to humble myself but I am not out there. I come on the radio with Heritage and we try to have conversations and we provide factual and accurate information. Sometimes it means pushing back on some of the misinformation being spewed by those elected people,” Percival said.

He added that because of political victimization, he’s been unable to fully take care of his daughter who is studying abroad.

  1. Good for him. says:

I am happy that people stepped up to help. That’s how a caring community should function.

I have read some nasty and uncaring comments arguing against helping. Let me say this to those people who made such remarks.

I hope you never become financially challenged in your life whereby you have to swallow your pride and reach out to the community to save your home.

Percival is not the first nor will he be the last facing potential foreclosure of their homes in the VI. Its has been a challenge for plenty others.

If you don’t wish to help these people out just stop rubbing salt in their already open wounds. Stop passing judgement and keep your opinions to yourself. The situation is bad enough.

If you or any of your family members have a mortgage on your home, foreclose could potentially happen if for whatever reason(s) you fell behind in your payments. So just be sensitive to peoples struggles and not be needlessly mean and judgemental.

I hope that with this help Percival will be able to get back on track. All the best Percival and kudos to the community who came thru for him.

I am starting to love the community again. Glad to see the people coming together against the hateful and bitchy government. Congrats Dameon. There is a Father above who is looking down with love. The evil wolves of politicians taking cover in the church and having the pastors preaching garbage because they giving them money. The devil bought the church. The holy spirit is not there. Time longer than twine.

  7. Thanks and may God Bless you. says:

My Brothers and Sisters, there are a lot of people who are suffering in silence just because of Pride and the negative re-action they are afraid of. I commend this young man for swallowing his Pride and coming forward which is sometimes painful in itself. If he had committed suicide, many would have said “Why didn’t he say something. Today for him. Tomorrow for someone else. I too, wish to say a Big Thank You to everyone who contributed to this cause. We always boast about living in a Christian Community and close-knit Community. Well situations like these shows our true values. All I would say to him and us all, Put God first in everything and pray without ceasing because its really God who used all of you to help him. Again, I say a Big “Thank You” and to the young man I say “There are more for you than against you”.

Why must all his $$ come from the government? The private sector is there. In a few months he will be right back in this situation if he doesn’t go look employment, swallow his pride and take the jobs out there.

You are too deep in this guys business. Do you know what’s going on with his finances or are you just sitting back throwing stones?

Who are you to determine who is living above their means or not? Stop with your unsolicited judgements.

Clearly you did not help. Move on. Leave it alone.

I was curious about that too, in all the news reports about him, it mentions he’s looking for government jobs and in this one he says the private sector jobs he worked at are all those that are operating under government contracts. What is his obsession with the government as a source of employment? Almost all journalists around the world know that they can’t expect favours from their governments if they criticize them, that’s just how the world works these days.

For those who were not listening to Tola radio, Dameon did not bring his business on radio, Cindy was the one who brought it to our attention and she suggested that 300 people can give $100 each. Dameon tried to hush her but Cindy wasn’t having it. I need a Cindy in my corner. How many of you have a friend who is going to help you like that. So many of us have mortgages, today tomorrow we lose our job we will be in a similar situation. God bless all those who gave. My heart was really touched. We NEVER know when we are going to need others to come through for us. You get in an accident and need blood, you have to depend on the community. We are all our brother’s keeper at the end of the day. For those who shared their unwelcome opinions about our black brother I really hope you never have to swallow your pride ever. God bless you Dameon. God bless Cindy, Heritage and all those who contributed.

I must join with the chorus of well wishers in congratulating Dameon on receiving the much needed help. I must though cry shame on his country people for the negative thoughts that dominated from their evil thoughts. By now every one knows that action is an expat. A strong, intelligent, black, handsome expat. I make no apology for who I am or where I was born. I will however defend the dignity of my fellow expats. So when a particular person who believe that they have a few nickles who would go on a certain radio program with a certain expat host who obvious forgot that he is an expat. And sat comfortably while grey hair funeral home woman degrade our islands and gave no defences it made my blood boil. How dare [that] woman wrong on every front believe she can attract my people like that. I tell fellow expats it is ok if tolans don’t like us. Charity begins at home and they don’t like themselves. But happy for you local boy Dameon, now you see what expats go through.

You all just love to talk, didn’t you hear him say that he has applied to over 100 private companies with promising interviews and then nothing? You think the government don’t control the private sector? Didn’t you hear him say he’s been on construction jobs and because it’s funded by government they asked the contractors to fire him? Unless you are victimized like Dameon you won’t understand. Hopefully it doesn’t happen to you.

  17. @jeff says:

Why are government jobs such an obsession for others who surround and advise our government? One reason is that it’s more stable, and then power for some and easy money with no results for some. The minister for works had no cause terminating his services. Ask him why he terminated his service and then threatened him that he won’t get any taxi license under him. The guy was looking a bare license to go taxi to support himself and his family but even that he was denied. Tell the Minister for communications to get off his childish horse and give the man his license to support himself and his family. It is that simple. But regularly keeping sankey sing out.

It is sad to see how many people have a negative opinion about his situation we suppose to be one BVI and we Don’t act like it at all. Never take someone else shortcomings as a joke or gossip because what you’ve done today will come back to you 10 times worst on another day. We as people need to stop bringing down each other and be united save the negative opinions and be positive and show love always. I congratulate all those who helped out Dameon your blessings are on the way. Do good and it shall return to you.

One thing tola gonna do is reward lazy people and help the capable… only government and government affiliated jobs he could look? so much other jobs in the corporate and tourism world. What’s the long term game plan on this? When he can’t pay going forward must the community come together again? It have real physically incapable and sick people with gofundmes that needs help and for weeks and months they can’t get to their goal but a healthy capable “man” gets 30K in less than 3 hours… BVI you all special BADDDDD
