More action must be taken to prevent child abuse locally
Minister of Health & Social Development, Carvin Malone has said more action must be taken to protect the physical, mental and emotional well being of children in the BVI.
In an address to the territory at the beginning of Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness month, Malone noted that the government will do whatever it can to protect the country’s children.
The month of April is recognised as Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness month, and it is observed internationally. This year, the theme is “Every Child Matters, Every Community Aware”,
“All of our children deserve and need love and respect. It is our job as adults to make sure our children are safe from physical and sexual abuse, that they are not exposed to violence, and expected to handle situations that are beyond their developmental ability,” Malone said.
“How we treat and care for our children today, will determine the type of future, family and society we will have tomorrow,” he added.
The minister outlined that the community could do several things to prevent child abuse.
“Volunteer your time and never discipline your child when you are upset,” he said. “Teach children their rights, because when children are taught that they are special and have the right to be safe, they are less likely to think abuse is their fault, and more likely to report an offender,” he added
The minister further advised the community to know the signs of child abuse and to be on the lookout for unexplained injuries, depression, fear of a certain adult, difficulty trusting others or making friends and sudden changes in eating or sleeping patterns.
“Above all, it is imperative for the community to report abuse. If you witness a child being harmed or see evidence of abuse, make a report to Social Development Department or the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force,” Malone said.

are we outta dah woods yet?
Maybe he should find a way to get his Social Development department to get off their hands and do their jobs. These nice annual speeches are all well and good, but it does not help the children who do not receive the love they need from their families and attention they need from the government department legally mandated to look out for their best interests and welfare. There are lots of qualified social workers employed by government. But a Masters degree with no heart does not make a good social worker, it just makes them educated.
You’re spitting FACTS!
Too many people with degrees in the wrong position when THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE WELLBEING OF CHILDREN.
Removal of incompetent staff from top down is the action that needs to be taken.
They put more effort into decorating for child abuse awareness month than into actual cases with a norm of passing cases they don’t want to deal with to other staff.
