More residents seeking care for STIs — Dr Georges
Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronald Georges has reported an increase in the number of people getting tested and seeking care for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the community.
Dr Georges noted that health professionals are aware STIs are generally under-reported due to the stigma attached to such diagnoses. However, he said data from this year suggest that more residents are taking infections such as herpes, chlamydia, and HIV more seriously.
“Over the course of this year, I would say we have seen an increase in the reporting of hepatitis B, chlamydia and HIV. In talking to the gynecologists and some other physicians, they are giving us anecdotal reports of increasing numbers of herpes and chlamydia infections. Reporting is definitely on the move in the community,” Dr Georges confirmed.
Although STI cases are being confirmed across all age groups, health professionals remain particularly concerned about the prevalence among young people, who are more likely to engage in risky behaviours. Dr Georges said easy access to alcohol is one of the main factors contributing to this trend.
“One thing we think is related (to risky behaviours) is alcohol, which is very cheap and easy to get in the territory. There’s a bit of a movement towards alcohol among young persons and we all know that alcohol is a social lubrication that helps people enjoy themselves. But it also reduces inhibitions and makes people more vulnerable,” Dr Georges explained.
The warning from health professionals comes as the Ministry of Health prepares to launch its annual ‘Wrap It Up’ campaign, aimed at reducing high-risk sexual behaviours during the upcoming festival season.
The Emancipation festivities include a variety of party events such as j’Ouverts and stage shows, which typically involve alcohol and celebratory activities that often lead to intimate encounters among patrons.

Be wary of cross contamination of herpes especially when getting your pubic area waxed and/or laser. It only takes skin to skin contact to transfer. For example, if you get cold sores on the face (even if sore is not visible) and that area is touched by the technician and then touched to the genitals, the herpes virus can transmit. Same for Jouvert when rubbing up on each other half naked…
