‘Multi-use’ boutique hotel to be developed at Pier Park

The section of the Tortola Pier Park believed to become the location of the new development.

Plans are underway for the construction of a multi-use boutique hotel at the C.B. Romney Tortola Pier Park.

This was announced through a tender document issued last Friday to invite interested developers to bid on the project.

The document indicated that the pier park “intends to undertake the development of a multi-use luxury boutique hotel, leisure and entertainment facilities, including supporting infrastructure to complement the existing park facilities and soon to be developed mega-yacht facility”.

The project is “envisaged to be developed [using a] public-private partnership format,” the document further said.

The development is expected to include — among other things — an upscale boutique property comprising of 20 to 25 rooms, a globally recognized management brand, luxury amenities and services, a full business centre including meeting rooms, and conference facilities to accommodate 200 to 350 persons.

“The developer selected through the bid process is required to undertake planning, detailed engineering and designing, financing, construction, marketing and operation, and maintenance of the proposed project,” the invitation document indicated.

Fulfilling a demand

Meanwhile, the development is said to have been proposed to meet a need for hotel and conference space facilities in the territory, creating availability of quality tourism products in the region, and to service the mega and superyacht sector.

“All these contribute to make the [pier park] a promising location for promoting business tourism and the other facets of tourism such as mega yachts, heritage, etcetera,” the aforesaid document noted.

An expression of interest meeting and site visit at the Pier Park’s conference room is scheduled for 11 am on Monday, October 21. The deadline for submission of bids is December 2 at noon.

Requirements

Interested parties must also have experience in the development and/or construction of a four or five-star category or boutique or a real estate project.

Applicants should also have a minimum net worth of $10 million in the last three financial years (2016 to 2019), the documents further indicated.

  2. WHY says:

You do have locally owned Maria’s by the Sea already in that location, so why is there any need for another hotel?

    • Because says:

Maria’s is a hotel of particularly low quality.

We want to attract tourists right? You need quality to do that.

Sounds like a venture for the investment club. How can a hotel operate with only 25 rooms. Who comes up with this crap. Not to worry, it will fall apart. Too many hands in the till.

How many rooms does Marias have?

    • CW says:

Some of the absolute best hotels in the world are less than 25 rooms. Some are less than 10 rooms. There are hotels in the BVI that size already, if you’d take a minute out of your busy schedule of negativity to see your own tourism product. Even a Google search will show you THOUSANDS OF HOTELS HAVE LESS THAN 25 ROOMS. All the BVI experts back at it again, hating on successful people with ideas they could never even dream of. You’re right to include Maria’s, but this is a totally different segment of the market they’re attracting. Why ALWAYS with the negativity and stupid assumptions? Nobody said a new hotel by the pier park and let’s ignore Maria’s. Both can easily exist if STRUPE THINKING doesn’t get in the way. SMH I swear some of you would lose your heads of they weren’t attached.

This statement lets me know they have an idea of who they want to apply already.

Stop being selfish talking about Maria’s by the Sea already being at that location. Have you ever travelled anywhere to see how many different properties occupy a certain area? The more accommodation, the better for business. I agree that they should also focus on restoring Prospect Reef, but that entire property needs to be bulldozed and reconstructed. That being said, it will cost less to construct a new building at the Pier Park,.

Mega yachts at the Pier Park? What would attract them to stay there? Anegada, Virgin Gorda, Trellis Bay for the airport, make sense. But Road Town?

Remember Wickhams Cay is a filled in dredged area of the Sea. Focus on developing what we have instead of creating more disturbances to the Area.

Part of Margaretaville no doubt. I hear that Jimmy Buffet franchise has been in the pipeline for some time.

Perhaps the VIP government could tell the public the names of all the Megayachts that have endorsed this ‘marina/hotel’ project for them and booked dock space/rooms for the grand opening in 2020 or 2021.

Or maybe the VIP government intends to pass legislation in the HOA requiring all BVI flag Megayachts to berth at the new marina/boutique hotel every year for a few months.

  10. Where's the PARKING? says:

We need parking before a hotel that services 300 people without parking!

The currently parking situation is an embarrassment. There is a fence dividing the on site parking space and the dirt parking…there is no way to walk through from one side to the other. Who ever built these public spaces why don’t they travel and see what the rest of the world is doing!

      STRUPE COMMENTS

300 people? WTF are you on about? Less than 25 rooms for 300 people? Does that even remotely make sense? Did you check before you just blathered STRUPE COMMENTS all over? No you just assumed you knew everything and RUSHED TO HE NEGATIVE. SHAME ON YOU.

THIS IS THE STRUPE THINKING THAT DESTROYS BVI.

      • Lol says:

If you read the article you will see that they suggest conference rooms to fit 250-300 people. So, theoretically they would all need parking. Check yourself before you get so aggressive when you yourself haven’t read the article carefully enough.

  11. Sarcastic Asian says:

Such a building will further degrade the harbour views from Road Town. Its a shame.

  12. it does seem odd says:

Prospect is now Government-owned and in real need of remediation.

Two things that significantly erode the propsect of anyone investing there are:

    * a new upscale hotel in Road Town and

    * the eyesore of being next to a dolphin prison full of cruise-shippers.

  13. Hmm says:

I don’t think I’m in for this idea, putting a hotel within the park will now garner more unnecessary strict rules(possibly No noise after 7pm or no driving in). Put a food court there that’s central, invite more food vendors with different ethnic foods that both Local and visitors (when they’re not being cheap) can enjoy, a stage within the center of the food court for entertainment, a white background so there can be movie nights while you enjoy your food.
