Multiple teacher vacancies being advertised by gov’t

Amid reports of ‘alarming resignations’ of educators locally, several teacher vacancies are simultaneously being advertised on the government’s website.

Up to publication time, BVI News recorded a tally of seven job openings for educators at the primary and secondary level.

There were openings for four teachers of varying subject disciplines and vacancies for three school principals.

While speaking the House of Assembly recently, Education Minister Sharie de Castro said the territory has lost teachers with an “alarming number of resignations” coming since the start of the school year.

The haemorrhaging of educators was said to be over issues such as a low rate of pay, the increased cost of living, the compensation offered in other countries, insufficient and outdated resources, and a challenging work environment, among others.

She explained the stark disparity in compensation between teachers locally and abroad, with entry-level teachers in the BVI getting just about $34,600 annually while across in the USVI their colleagues will earn $50,000 beginning this August, and further away in Texas, the starting salary is now set at $61,500.00 per annum.

But as the minister described the loss of teachers to other countries, she pointed out that the demands on teachers have only grown over the years.

And while noting that educators play an essential role in the economic development of the Virgin Islands, the minister made an urgent plea for lawmakers to properly address the compensation issues affecting teachers in the territory.

Now that the pandemic has passed the BVI primary and secondary teachers must physically show up early each morning to teach and then teach all day until all the students go home. 5 long days a week plus prep work on the weekends adds up to too much actual work for a less than survival wage. Teacher exodus will continue until their numerous problems are resolved by intelligent minds in the Ministry of Education. Currently no such minds exist in this Ministry!

Please research and check the news all over the world as this is not a problem in the BVI alone but worldwide at this time.

  7. Chickens coming home to roost says:

When administrators begin to make division with their teaching sstagg and begin to berate expatriates and other status of teachers who eventually come belongers you throw words at them and speak to them like children in front of students – remove them as head of Departments because the sole criteria – they are not locals , what is the result . A paradigm shift . ! An Exodus ! A brain drain!
. During Mr Stoutt time he had to dismantled a group
that a teacher was forming within the staff to have only local teachers in within the staff to create a subtle division . Stoutie saw right through it . What a life for my country

  10. Starting Salary VS Entry Level says:

“in Texas, the starting salary is now set at $61,500.00 per annum.”

This is the starting salary for a specific teaching job and level of experience.

NOT a starting salary for an entry level or just any teaching job.
There are A LOT of prerequisite qualifications for that “starting salary”.
