My district suffers because I speak out

Penn.

Marlon Penn has stated that whenever he speaks frankly about the issues affecting the territory, the government retaliates by neglecting infrastructure upgrades needed in his constituency — the Eighth Electoral District.

Penn said this has been happening since Andrew Fahie took office in 2019 and is the reason why sewerage infrastructure in his district remains in a state of disrepair.

No sewerage work was done between 2019 and the last election and it really was a means of punishing me for speaking on these issues that impact this country. So my people were left to suffer because of the immaturity of persons,” Penn told the Talking Points radio show.

Penn said while the sewerage infrastructure in D8 deteriorates, the government continues to carry out repairs in other districts. He said the same treatment is meted out to his constituents when road maintenance works are being done.

“When they’re doing the maintenance works, they go all the way around to Fat Hog’s Bay, Paraquita Bay and when they reach the police station, the truck runs out of asphalt, the plant breaks down and they just can’t get past that. It’s like some kind of force field is preventing them from getting into the D8. My people continue to suffer because of political immaturity,” Penn explained.

Infrastructural upgrades are needed in all communities across the territory. But some sections of society hold the view that repairs aren’t carried out fairly but in communities represented by members of the sitting government.

these are the kind of problems facing bvi islanders. every time people speak up for the community that they live in and around there is no one to lesson and to address issues that affect the daily life of the people living in the community.

  6. The evidence is clear. Just take a drive thru District 8. says:

I agree with Mr. Penn. All districts should get equal treatment when it comes to infrastructural upgrades.

We have to think about the country as a whole. To fix infrastructure issues, which are lacking overall, in one district and leave others undone is like cleaning the living room of your house and leaving the bathroom unkept.

All districts deserve better. District 8 residents deserve better. They pay taxes too. The first road visitors from the airport sees is that passing thru District 8, and it’s shameful.

Their first impression is nothing but bad roads, which is not good for the overall image of the territory.

To the decision makers on such matters: Do better. Look to the larger picture.

District 8 nor any other district that does not have a representative as part of the government should not have to wait until they do to get work done in their districts which clearly requires the governments resources.

Understand how your government works. District reps do not have or given the resources to carry out infrastructural projects.

This is the function of Public Works and development and other government agencies. In other to get things done, those agencies need resources and approvals.

Now, one could argue that non governmental district reps should use their political skills to pressure the government to do things in their district and their perhaps lack their is fair criticism, but the fact remains nothing to little gets done in the districts of non government reps. I would argue that should not be.

The Premier is from District 7 bordering on 8. District 7 I might add is filled with bad roads and pot holes too. 7 and 8 are one people and community.

It would be a shame if the Premier leaves office and never at least fix a pot hole in his own community.

    2: Hon Marlon Penn

Good points. Despite my position above that all districts should get equal support, you correctly stated facts.

The District 8 Rep when he was in a stronger position to affect change unfortunately didn’t.

As such, he should shoulder some of the blame here, as one could argue he let his constituents down when he probably could have done more when he had the power to.
