New assistance grants draft policy released

The Education Ministry has launched an Assistance Grants Programme aimed at providing financial support to Virgin Islanders in the fields of education, sports, and creative arts.

In making the announcement, Education Minister, Sharie de Castro, expressed that the programme is designed with transparency in mind to assist individuals in accessing such financial aid.

Speaking about the Assistance Grants Programme Policy, Minister de Castro stated: “The objective of the Assistance Grants Programme Policy is to provide a framework for the administration of grants, set clear guidelines for the awarding of grants, and establish parameters for the objective selection of recipients in the territory.”

It was explained that the programme aims to ensure transparent and fair distribution of grants, fostering equal opportunities for individuals seeking financial assistance.

Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Dr Marcia Potter, further advised that the ministry will identify priority areas for grant awards each year based on the forecasted needs of the territory.

She emphasised the importance of public input, noting that there will be an electronic format for input on the policy, allowing individuals to make suggestions and offer comments.

The ministry encouraged the public to carefully review the policy and provide feedback to help shape the future plans.

The ministry said it remains steadfast in its commitment to providing high-quality education and rehabilitative services, as well as facilitating access to sports and recreation in its effort to enrich the lives of all residents in the Virgin Islands.

  2. Education first says:

Sorry to say it, but it’s a fact – we need to develop the educators in our community to strengthen the long-term development of our country. This is the first priority for these new grants. Sports and creative arts can come later.

Does the country of your birth grant educational funding to persons who are not citizens of the country? If so, please name the country because education is expensive and I am sure that there are lots of persons from other countries who would like to go there and access that financing. Stop looking for an excuse to complain about everything. Work towards becoming a citizen and you can apply as well.

  9. Deh Watcha says:

Need to cut back or put a hold on grants until they get Althea Scatliffe school rebuilt, Capoons bay school rebuilt, Eslyn Henley Richiez rebuilt.

Need to get updates on those institutions. Develop the foundations first. Proper school maintenance programs. These schools and others are where persons referred to as potential grant recipients come from.

  10. The way it is says:

It’s always an earful and a mouthful, a combination of both. I think that the first grant needs to be put directly into the education system supplying the schools with all the basic supplies. It should be the responsibility of the department of education to put fans in the classrooms to provide a comfortable and relaxing environment for the teachers and students alike and NOT the poor parents who are asked to do so. Within the next few weeks schools will be closed for the summer so the maintenance crew will have more than enough time to install the fans and do the repairs that are needed . So cut the first cheque here Miss Minister and do some improvements in the schools. Charity begins at home and this should be demonstrated in action instead of pure talk.
