New Governor to be sworn in today

Mr Daniel Pruce has been appointed as the next Governor of the British Virgin Islands.

Governor Designate Daniel Pruce is expected to be sworn into office today, January 29 after arriving in the territory on Friday, January 26 with his wife Rachael Morgan.

The governor-designate has more than 30 years of experience in public service, with his most recent overseas post being British Ambassador to the Philippines from 2017 to 2021.

Prior to that, he served as Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Madrid from 2012 to 2016 and the British Embassy in Bangkok from 2008 to 2012.

Pruce most recently worked as Director of Communication at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) from 2021 to 2022.

“I’m delighted to have arrived in BVI. Rachael and I were very grateful for the warm welcome at the airport. I look forward to being sworn in as Governor on Monday,” Pruce said. “It will be a privilege to serve the people of the islands and to work in collaboration with a wide range of partners to continue to build a secure and prosperous future for BVI.”

Pruce replaces former Governor John Rankin and enters office at a critical time for governance in the territory.

One of the main issues of concern is the implementation of the recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry (COI), including a controversial request by Rankin for enhanced powers for the Governor’s Office to help move that process forward.

The former governor said his request was necessary because there was insufficient drive and determination across the various ministries and departments to deliver on the agreed-upon COI deadlines.

The Swearing-In Ceremony at the Supreme Court will be live-streamed via the Department of Information and Public Relations (GIS) from 1:30 p.m.

When the BVI becomes all whites and the king or queen is black will the governor be black or white? Think about that for a minute.

I live in the UK and have been saying the same thing. The optics looks bad. Slave master trying to take back slaves which makes alot of the nation resistant to the direct rule approach. Send a black person – show that the UK wants to take steps to assist with someone who better understands the culture, the thinking of the people rather than trying to take over.

It look bad especially off the track record of the UK doing this in other Caribbean islands. It’s not exactly a huge success

Are you aware that blacks also had blacks as slaves, similarly to what happens in the BVI now? Grow up.

And so? White had, sold and made money off of white on white slavery for centuries.

The complete history can found and learned.

  6. Unknown says:

If you’re not willing to say this prejudice stuff to his face then maybe not type it out. Cowardly comments from people who’ve never dealt with racism from white people just comes across as cowardly.

  7. Foul Resident says:

And so, the slave and master carrieson. What a sad mentality among the Black people. What continuing crime of the white.

  8. Virgin Islander boy says:

All the Governors of The BVI were white, is White and will still be white its only the outside that we are looking at and not the very true intentions. What does it matter anyhow?.
