No-confidence debate against Wheatley gov’t starts in HOA

Opposition Leader Myron Walwyn yesterday launched the long-anticipated debate on the motion of no-confidence against the Dr Natalio Wheatley-led administration, outlining a series of concerns over what he described as government inaction across key areas in the territory.

The motion narrowly avoided the same fate as the previous no-confidence motion filed by former Opposition Leader Ronnie Skelton, after Premier Wheatley attempted to amend the order paper by introducing a new item — a move that would have delayed the start of the debate.

Walwyn, however, strongly objected, accusing the Premier of trying to stall proceedings.

“What I’m seeing is an abuse of the process. On the last occasion (sitting), they said they had only two items and now they are adding a third. When the time comes, people will hear that there’s an adjournment, just as an attempt to make sure the vote of no-confidence is not heard. It’s not right!” Walwyn declared.

Premier Wheatley responded, saying the timing of the debate was not ideal given the ongoing Emancipation Festival celebrations. However, he eventually withdrew the new item and allowed the no-confidence debate to proceed.

Walwyn then launched into his presentation, criticising what he described as the crumbling state of the economy and the increasing hardship facing Virgin Islanders under the current administration.

He pointed to what he called the rapid decline in local economic participation and urged the territory to preserve its small business culture.

“It gives me no pleasure at all to say this because I was once a supporter of the VIP Party. You see now that it’s festival time, every man is broke! Everybody broke! You’re wondering, ‘why the village is so empty?’ It’s because people broke! And under a real Virgin Islands Party with Ralph O’Neal and others, you couldn’t go into festival with everybody broke,” Walwyn said passionately.

The no-confidence debate is scheduled to resume on Thursday, July 31, at 10 a.m., when other members of the House of Assembly are expected to contribute.

Last night, the Leader of the Opposition spelled out our challenges in plain English—so clearly that even a fool or a child could understand where we are going wrong. Importantly, rather than just pointing out the faults, he offered concrete guides, pointers, and best practices that any citizen could follow to help bring about improvement.

To vote against this motion is to vote in favor of mediocrity, nepotism, dishonesty, criminality, and ultimately, the failure of the Virgin Islands. Let’s see who among us is truly worthy of the title “Honourable.”

He/she who has been paying attention knows now that there is only one “Honorable member” in that hall.

To understand the current present day governing philosophy and mind set, one must go back to the genesis of this present administration.

From the elected intent to enriching its pockets, driven by pure money greed, to the almost collapse of the entire government, the country’s political governance and people are still experiencing the negative effects of bad politics by bad human beings with the title of “politicians.”

Therefore, it has become abundantly clear that the time has since passed to right this disaster.

Within the deafening silence of the people, they are asking for a new governing body yesterday.

Ultimately, the VI needs a new political beginning with new minds, new consciences and new integrities.

It is time to build a new ship from rudder up! Let proceedings begin.

Because V.I.P. party which has been and is now akin to a chicken without a head, the time is now for genuine change, genuine change for the better for all.

The Premier misjudged the situation last night. He is apparently still under the illusion that he could deal with Myron Walwyn in the same way he dealt with Ronnie Skelton.

Rent in the BVI is out of control — landlords charging ridiculous prices with no oversight. Grocery stores? Markups are insane. As soon as minimum wage went up, prices did too. And NHI? Being drained by greedy private practitioners. The whole system is failing the people.

He may have his hidden agenda
BUT the nation did not want it plainer than that.
If we continue to be blinded by political affiliation and could not see through what he was saying then we are down in a Rabbit Hole .

Even those who dislike him in the house had no choice but to tip their hats to him . That is a leader. We need to as a people who want to see our territory progress stop fighting when a person does and say the right thing

We prefer to stand idly by instead of supporting RIGHT because it does not come from the mouth of people we loathe
    We have to do bettet

You meant because it comes from the mouth of people you loathe. Typical badmind behavior, I must say. But everyone truth-speaker will be rewarded for speaking truth, and all liars will burn in hell.

      • @To Correction says:

No, they should be rejected and bu**ed at the polls.

The country needs another cleaning brush.

Let it have another chance at a new Leadership, new. minds, new ideas and a new HOA.

There is no evident progress being seen or made other than a few politicians raking in thousands monthly, but not one cent is trickling down.

        This is beyond over bearing.

I call on my District 8 Representative to support as Myron spelled out everything in layman terms so the wntire territory can understand.
Not because he formed the Alliance eveything he said is factual.
Let us roll up out sleeves and do what is right regardless of who says it
Let us not play politics with the present and future of my beloved BVI

The LOA had good points but I find he was being very rude at times, and becoming unhinged. Maybe he needed to stick to the script, would have been 100 times more effective to the listening audience.

  10. Deh Watcha says:

One thing I learned from Mr Walwyn last night is that it takes 4 or 5 persons sitting on a board (Collecting about $4k TO $5k to meet once a month) to say yes to giving someone $400 in assistance.

But to move $5million you need only the premier’s instruction?

I know those government members are so glad to have a day to go and try to research and find anything to debate this motion. Even the premier didn’t rebut anything. Probably digging thru all type of paperwork and tapes right now.

However, what we have rite her currently is what is termed an ‘Anchor Baby’. See that there? Okay tell me about that now. I don’t want a ‘Merican Premier for the VI. Period!!!

    • Reality check says:

Your current premier is an island man from st. Thomas who eating and keeping BVIslanders down. Check Allen W page and you would see people from the premier’s district in the garbage eating while he go on trips every week on taxpayers money. Can’t fix a school roads or community center. When you go to him for assistance he lies and say he helping you while he listening to every thing you say like it is gossip has 30 advisors and if you add them up cannot amount to 1. All that tax money could fix the roads, clean the overgrown bush on the road monthly and feed the homeless. He never had a full time job in his life never owned a business but because of retarded people he leads a country straight to hell because my own BVIslanders here do not know any better.
