No one on bail should be running for office — Malone

Malone

Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Territorial At-Large Representative Carvin Malone has contended that no one should be running for elected office with the spectre of prison time hovering over their head.

“We have a case where… Anyone that is out on bail should not be running. I will say no more. Somebody has to say it,” Malone said while speaking at a campaign event in the Seventh Electoral District last evening. “Somebody has to understand that this is not… what do you call it, a poppy show.”

The comments appeared to be a thinly veiled dig at National Democratic Party (NDP) candidate, Myron Walwyn, who is the lone candidate currently on bail while facing criminal charges. Malone indicated that he would have comfortably added greater detail on how he truly felt about the matter, if there had been no members of the media or television cameras present while he was speaking.

Notably, the first-term lawmaker avoided offering any position on candidates that have already served time in the territory’s prison. Although several members of Malone’s VIP have acknowledged that Eighth District candidate, Allen Wheatley, has served time in prison, the party has largely treated that incident as a blip in the candidate’s journey.

However, according to the eligibIlity rules governing candidates for office in the territory’s legislature, a person cannot be elected to the House of Assembly if they have been in jail for a year or more, or have been released from jail after serving such a sentence within the past five years.

Just last year, the VIP lost one of its stalwarts and foremost leaders to the US justice system when immediate past Premier Andrew Fahie was arrested in Florida on charges of money laundering and drug smuggling. Authorities subsequently added an indictment for racketeering to Fahie’s cluster of criminal charges which he shares jointly with co-accused, Oleanvine Maynard, the former BVI Ports Authority Managing Director, and her son, Kadeem Maynard.

ESHS wall project

Walwyn, a former Education Minister with the NDP, along with former Assistant Secretary in the Education Ministry, Lorna Stevens, were both hauled before the courts months ago and charged with Breach of Trust by a Public Officer for their roles in the controversial Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) perimeter wall project which was executed when Walwyn served as the portfolio minister in a previous NDP administration.

The 2014 project was plagued with cost overruns after it was broken down into dozens of petty contracts and work orders by the NDP cabinet. The resulting fiasco saw the total cost balloon from an initial budgeted figure of $828,000 to well over a million dollars. There were also reports that some contractors received full payment despite not having completed their allotted section of the wall project .

Even before his arrest, Walwyn, a former two-term legislator with the NDP, had strongly denied any wrongdoing and has since vowed to vigorously defend the charges when his matter comes up for trial.

Anyone is entitled to stand, criminal record or not.

The important thing is that the VIP endorses a convicted felon and believes he is suitable for office where he would control government money.

This says more about the VIP than anything else does.

      Its the party of crooks.

You and Headcoach had us lock down during covid like a bunch of cattle. The USVI stole our economy and look at us now. STT will be hosting over 19,000 people today off the ubersoca cruise. When headcoach was to be negotiating on behalf of the people he’s up there making a mockery of us the people. Look at all the money you guys squandered. You will be next on BAIL. Just a matter of time.

We should ask the Premier who went for him. Do anything to get what you want. They are a set of weaklings and any majority voting them back in to office will be the ones responsible for our demise. VIP sees nothing wrong with what they do and are sympathetic only when they notice the majority of the people kicking up. Remove them from office. Remove them and mix your votes to get a coalition government. They must work together. Keep a Unity Government in place and we will get a better Virgin Islands. The now government needs to be replaced.

People are confusing two things. The one guy that already served time, if I’m not mistaken he served 9 months in jail and that was 20 years ago. The issue of being on bail is that if you were to win your seat and then found guilty by the courts then where is the representation? We all know who he is referring to and that particular candidate would make a very good representative but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s an issue. You cannot defend a person contesting while on bail with a person that served their time 20 years ago and have no current charges pending.

    • What? says:

Nobody is confusing anything. To point out that a thief from government from however long ago who when he held the office that was responsible for preventing theft from government, was convicted of theft from government has no call anywhere near any elected office in the country from which he stole is not justifying a candidate on bail running. It is simply marvelling at the fact that we are at such a low place that a major political party exercises so poor a level of judgment and utter disrespect for people to think not only that it’s ok to place that person on their ticket but to ironically be pointing fingers anywhere else. All of them on the green ticket – EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM – should be embarrassed to be standing on stage holding hands with this character presenting themselves for representation of the people of this country and particularly so, in the time of COI and Premier Fahie and his mess.

    NO POLITRICKS CAMPAIGN ON POLICY
    [Stop poli-ticking on policing]

    By Tafari Zharr

Win on your past merits and your strong platform, and not against any person, for the people.

We are not in a place to throw stones – we keep giving the Privy Council ammunition to not suspend threatening direct rule. What’s the strategy when all y’all need is simple togetherness and the Plans and You should be the HNIC to bring these political minds together.

Your father had such humility and gratitude, under fire. Bring that fire from your belly – that of your ancestors – to this fight but do not attack the rights, of citizens, that extend yo yourself.

You are wrong wasting campaign time on the criminalization of a brother- the judicial system is separate from house. Look, Churchill once said let’s “Keep Europe White” but I challenge you “ Get VI Right – it sounds and looks so wrong so imagine how it feels!

Write about policies that affect how we rise above any lowered expectations of governance and what you have done to make a difference for measuring local accountability. Talk about your successes and what we can do to improve and strengthen our constitution. I want to hear about housing from you and programs for grooming young leadership.

You have so many great points of views to offer given your legacy and history yet you
Bring this talk about corruption, infractions, subtractions; and which are all distractions but for whose benefits?

Pick the fight for All the people as relates to value or unfair systems including bail that needs reforms.

Emancipation happened because of uprising against gross injustices- yet abolition of slavery did not end unfairness or inequalities; humans behave that way when seeking to hold on or acquire power.

Winning isn’t everything; but how you win is!

We can’t become the very thing we resented- and we should not embrace the impairments of the past that exclude – the “exclusive club” expels and expreses “exceptions” and exacts for their own empowerment.

If Suppressing campaign participation using Bail or Suspicion should be the only exception to the rule then certainty you must add “guilt by association” among other exceptions!

Neither are sufficiently reasonable arguments to exclude the rights of any citizen to participate in a democratically free election in a territory that is potentially eyeing self determination.

To suggest that bail ought to be a disqualification implies an impairment in understanding justice and equality which is disheartening coming from a traveled educated kind person. It’s a mistake to suggest that – politicians usually find themselves arrested for various reasons.

Including yourself, NONE of the political hopefuls in this election would be eligible to participate in local politics – making direct rule- absolutely.

Tip: Fight on democratic policies not on policing! Uk has security covered!

“There but by the grace of God go I” has Christian community gone amuck, really?

Yet the loser VIP is saying that Foy is innocent until proven guilty??? I notice that the persons who cannot match Myron’s accomplishments, they are the ones who always have his name in their mouth. What exactly has Malone accomplished? They are so afraid of Myron that they conjured up malicious charges against him from the first hint that he was possibly going to run again. Plain as day. Everyone knows this. The VIP party have given themselves a name: dutty and desperate. They played their hand to try and tarnish this great man’s name. They would do anything. But the creator above is all seeing and he does not like ugly. See where your leader ended up VIP? That is where you all could be heading next. Stop your dutty and desperate ways.

Same with anyone that served time or is expected to serve time or before the court or any inkling of guilt, Should not be allowed to run. You had your chance and screwed it up, go sit down for true! All guilty by association.
Take all the first timers and put them in office. They could sure do a much better job than those before them.
