No sewerage near EE Police Station, says Premier

The East End Police Station on Tortola.

Officials have refuted claims that a sewerage overflow near the East End Police Station was the real reason behind its sudden closure last week.

Premier and Seventh District Dr Natalio Wheatley disclosed that officers at the station expressed concern through Acting Commissioner Jackie Vanterpool about a sewerage issue near the station.

However, he suggested there was an assumption by some officers that there was a sewerage overflow caused by preparatory work being done for a pump station near the police station.

Premier Wheatley said it may have been more prudent to close the station after seeking an evaluation from Chief Environmental Health Officer Lionel Michael at the Environmental Health Department.

An evaluation has since been requested and the Premier expressed confidence about the outcome. “I’m pretty sure that when Mr Michael comes back with his report, it will confirm that there’s no sewerage there,” the Premier said.

He explained that the area has a natural spring and said workers preparing the location for the pump station had been digging in the area and that water swelled after a few days of inactivity.

“We haven’t gotten to a stage where sewerage is going to be pumped to that area. It’s a lot of work that’s going to take place before that becomes a reality,” the Premier added.

Dr Wheatley said he has been in discussion with Police Commissioner Mark Collins and promised to press for the reopening of the police station once that report comes back and confirms there is no sewerage.

In the meantime, Eighth District Representative Marlon Penn described the situation as unfortunate, noting that there was no evidence of any sewerage in the area.

Penn called for a dialogue with the community about the sewerage project and the implications and impact of the project on the community.

Penn said a meeting should have happened before and explained that he was not advised as the District Representative that the project was about to start.

There was a high stench so whether or not it was sewerage the stench was unbearable. If you were not there to experience it how can you even speak about. If your were there something is either wrong with your sense of smell or you are just a follower. What you do not want for yourself you should not want for others.

  8. What a Shame says:

The Premier wants to play politics with lives of the officers. Everything is a political game for them but truth will always be truth. Why didn’t consult with the police before they did major work near the police station. There was no kind of consultation. Now they coming with their pee linky bird stories. They need to be truthful with this matter and stop trying to cover the real issue. The officers need to sick out.
