Non-stop concert is a no for me

Opposition legislator Stacy ‘Buddha’ Mather has been appointed as Deputy Speaker.

Deputy Speaker Stacy ‘Buddha’ Mather has expressed that he is not in support of the government’s Non-Stop Concert which has drawn criticism from several residents who believe the allocated funds are being wasted.

Speaking on the Morning Braff radio show recently, Mather said he too believes the $250,000 earmarked for the concert could be better spent within the community.

However, he said, the BVI has to learn from this experience since the government has decided to move forward with the event.

“I do not agree with it. I’ve received a lot of calls from people who believe the funds could have gone somewhere else and I absolutely agree with that. I asked the Premier what his reasons were for doing this and he explained himself. It has already been set to move forward,” Mather explained.

“In theory, I hope we learn from things that we do. The public didn’t agree with it, it is happening, how do we move forward from it if we can’t reverse it. It’s the same thing with the Greedy Bill – something was done, the public didn’t agree with it, how do we pull it back so it doesn’t go forward.”

Mather said in the future, he hopes the government will plan events like the Non-stop concert in advance so that it can be pulled back if the public disagrees with it. The concert has been met with criticism since it was announced earlier this month, as residents believe the government should be spending money on failing infrastructure and other social ills in the community.

However, Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has stood by his decision to host the event, saying it is part of a larger effort to build entertainment tourism in the BVI. Earlier this week, the Premier joined the Morning Braff radio show where he said he takes full responsibility for the decision to move forward with the Non-stop concert.

He said he doesn’t want residents to blame the ministers within the government as he has no problem taking full responsibility for the controversial show.

This is the continuing issue I have – Cabinet is made up of 5, but 4 of those 5 seem to be only able to vote on a matter if the Premier agrees. Or, they are too scared to step up and dissent.

This is a supposed democracy yet other Ministers cannot step up am vote against the Premier if they disagree. Especially if all 4 disagree. Surely this is how it should work?

Even Caucus should be pressing this matter – you cannot convince me that all 7 agree with the Premier. Are there no checks and balances against a dictatorship?

I can respect a person who sees a wrong, and calls it out for what it is. The fact is, Mr. Mather doesn’t let party cloud his judgement, and for that you have my respect and my support. I wish you well in both public and personal endeavors!

We really need to begin to do things differently if we are to progress as a country. I bet if you take a poll of Cabinet, more than half of the Ministers do not agree with this concert and I can see how the Premier may have gone out on a limb on his own given this is tourism related matter within his ministerial powers. If that is the case, the troubling question is why? What is driving him digging his heels in on this in the face of the he backlash? Who is he answerable to? Who is steering that ship? Or is it simply that he is an idiot? Either scenario doesn’t bode well for the country. What we need to do is follow the money (looks like a job for you, Cindy) and I bet we will find the answers. It would be unfortunate if the deposed Premier continues to be the de facto Premier pulling the strings in the background. By the grace of God we will know, eventually.

Has our level of reasoning and intelligence dropped so low that wrong is right and right is wrong?!? But to spend $250k PLUS – mind ayo! Let’s see the final accounting bill after this fiasco is done and a fork stuck in it. Whey don’t the schools have friggin’ cafeterias in 2023?!?! Geh ayo MS…miss me wid ayo petty BS….this ‘event’ is nothing more than a smoke screen to failings of our past governments and that of the governors who allowed the f’tards to get away with their crimes. The man is right. This is public funds, tax payers money. Public founds should be injected back into building the country. It should benefit society and go to “needs”. All of ya’ll who complaining about the pot holes, this is your pot hole money.

Premier is also right. I agree we need to start building other areas of the economy. I don’t know the intricacies of this non-stop party, but entertainment tourism is a brilliant idea and we should be aiming to draw crowds from all over the world. We got the best beaches, food, accommodation and people. No where else in the world can touch our spirit.

Quarter of a million USD of public funds should not be going to this cause however. The offshore firms that are stuffing millions from our BVI product should be paying for this, instead of building their million dollar lifestyles back where these ppl come from.

Sexuality and Religion are protected under the Human Rights Act, so regardless if you chose to support his rights, he is a good man. He will surely fight for yours.
