The Town and Country Planning Department has been selected among thousands of organisations globally to receive a ‘Special Achievement in Geographic Information System’ award for its ‘BVI Open for Business’ map application.

An award ceremony will take place at the annual Esri User Conference in San Diego, California from July 9 to 13.

In addition to receiving the award, the department’s contributions to ‘online geographic information system’ will be showcased at the event.

Local Chief Planner, Gregory Adams said he was proud his department’s hard work is reaping rewards.

“My staff has worked hard especially in the wake of hurricane Irma on many GIS mapping applications to assist with the recovery effort. It is indeed gratifying to see their hard work being acknowledged by this prestigious organisation,” he said.

He then urged the local business community and the public to utilize the map by visiting https://goo.gl/g1HRFc and entering their information so persons can know where they are located.

“The application serves as a convenient information source for users, while businesses are able to advertise their services, which helps the economy by making information available for both residents and visitors so that they can patronise these businesses,” Adams said.

Government launched the interactive map on January 5 in the aftermath of the September 2017 hurricanes.

It provides details of functioning public and private-sector businesses.

Additionally, it presents users with a virtual representation of business locations, their operating hours, as well as their contact information.

The easy-to-use map is compatible with all electronic devices with location and GPS functions.
