Opposition explains absence from Premier’s press conference
Even though they had initially committed to joining the Premier at a press conference this week, Opposition members chose to stay away because they felt the government needed to account for any perceived failings the Governor has accused them of.
This was the reason given by Opposition Leader Ronnie Skelton at a separate press conference held by Opposition members of the House of Assembly. Skelton and all Opposition members said they support the Premier’s pushback against additional powers for the UK and will stand with the territory’s leader at the appropriate time.
But they maintained it wasn’t necessary for them to participate in the very first press conference after the Governor announced his plans to potentially seek additional powers over the BVI.
“At some point, we (government and opposition) need to stand in the same place at the same spot. But I think for the first press conference after the Governor’s report, the government needed to defend why these things were not done. If it was just one issue, I wouldn’t have had a problem but there were too many issues,” Skelton explained.
He added that the Opposition also chose a separate conference so they could properly articulate their positions on the UK threat that looms. When asked if the Opposition knows when they plan to join the government and take a public stance against the threat of UK rule, Skelton suggested that it might be in the House of Assembly.
He mentioned that elected leaders have discussed the option of holding an extraordinary meeting of the House of Assembly where they’d all show their support against any idea of a UK takeover.

LET THE GOVERNMENT TAKE SOME HEAT FOR BEING TARDY….BY THE WAY, HOW COME WE ARE NOT HEARING FROM THE OTHER GOVERNMENT MEMBERS? LORNA HAVE THEM HIDDEN IN A CORNER?
It’s the present Administration runs the Territory with or without an Opposition. The Opposition doesn’t carry much weight in governance, only there to do the fulfillment of monitoring the Government for their Constituients. This Opposition acting as if they are an Administrative entity in the HOA.
WALKED OUT ON HIS GOVERNMENI AGAIN?

With all the uncovered corruption by the COI, it never ceases to amaze me how this Government won’t take responsibility for what brought us to this. Get the COI recommendations in place, stop making excuses, and stop acting as though you own Tortola. We the taxpayers want accountability and for the corruption to stop. If that takes UK rule then so be it!
