Opposition has ‘lean and hungry’ look for power — Premier
Premier Dr. Natalio Wheatley has accused Opposition members of misleading the public in their so-called relentless pursuit of power.
While debating a recent supplementary budget in the House of Assembly, the Premier highlighted systemic issues within the public service that continue to make residents unhappy, such as infrastructure and services.
Dr. Wheatley described the public service as fraught with challenges. “The public service has many challenges in serving the public; it’s called a public service because we are supposed to be serving the public,” Dr. Wheatley explained.
He noted a common mistake among residents: the belief that politicians alone are to blame for poor services. According to the Premier, this belief is encouraged both by the opposition and the government, depending on who is in power.
“The question is with the excellent public officers that we have, why is it that we are not experiencing the level of service which we would like to see?” he asked.
Dr. Wheatley drew a parallel to a historical reference to express his views on the political hunger for power within the Opposition. “I read the play Julius Caesar. I studied literature, and literature has many lessons that we can learn. In Julius Caesar, Julius Caesar — I believe he probably says it to maybe Antony or somebody like that — and he’s looking at Cassius and he says, ‘Cassius has a lean and hungry look’; It reminds me sometimes when I listen to some members of the Opposition,” he stated.
The Premier accused the Opposition of manipulating public perception for their gain, referencing the issue of Opposition members blaming him as the Finance Minister for budgeting inaccuracies.
“We are speaking about under-budgeting of figures, and there are some for their own purposes who have given the impression that the Minister of Finance is the one who is crunching numbers and going back and receiving numbers and verifying numbers,” Dr. Wheatley said.
Dr. Wheatley pointed out that the BVI operates under a colonial system that does not adequately support holding public officers accountable, contrasting starkly with other systems where significant administrative changes accompany political leadership changes.
The Premier called for a deeper public understanding and dialogue about the structural challenges within the government to move beyond superficial blame and work towards real solutions.
