Opposition should remove egos, beg forgiveness — Skelton Cline

Claude Skelton Cline

Commentator and clergyman Claude Skelton Cline has warned Opposition members in the House of Assembly to put aside their egos and seek forgiveness if they want to present themselves as a viable alternative to the current Virgin Islands Party (VIP) government.

Speaking on his Honestly Speaking programme on ZBVI, Skelton Cline urged Opposition lawmakers to unify for the good of the territory.

“You have not offered this country a picture of what an alternative government will look like,” Skelton Cline remarked. He stressed that the National Democratic Party (NDP) and the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM) must collaborate, arguing that their continued division undermines any chance of toppling the VIP government.

Skelton Cline criticised the Opposition’s approach to the proposed vote of no confidence, questioning their preparedness to govern. He stated, “How are we to meaningfully entertain the notion of enduring such instability, only to vote for the same confusion?” The commentator highlighted the need for a united front to ensure political stability and progress.

According to Skelton Cline, the ongoing disunity is reminiscent of the last election, where the Opposition failed to form a coalition government despite having an opportunity. He warned that the VIP would likely retain power if elections were held today due to the Opposition’s fragmented state.

A call for forgiveness

Skelton Cline suggested that Opposition members must focus on humility and reconciliation to regain the public’s trust.

“I suggest we clear the room of pride, vacuum up all the egos, and beg forgiveness,” he said, adding that this approach could help create a unified and credible government.

He also emphasised the importance of collaboration within the current government, advocating for efforts to build the territory rather than political infighting.

“At least make an attempt to get the best and work together to advance and improve the lives of the people of this country,” Skelton Cline advised.

The Opposition has faced criticism for its inability to present a cohesive leadership strategy since the 2023 general election. Weeks ago, the Opposition attempted to move a vote of no confidence in the House of Assembly, but the government thwarted their efforts through a walkout.

In the meantime, the perceived lack of unity between the NDP and PVIM continues to cast doubt on the Opposition’s ability to form a stable government.

    Mr Claude,

I want to commend you for your efforts of bringing a message but at this juncture it is not about the message, it’s the messenger. You guys have caused so much distrust in yourself that the country does not care for your messages.

The country have seen you played both sides of government when they have power and it is evident that what you and John Cline say always comes off with a bitter remorseful taste in the mouth.

I along with many others of the public would like for you to be quiet because you guys comes across like a howling sorrowful dog every morning just to make the news and it is irritating to the public eyes and ears.

Go take a chill pill and mute yourself. Let life live itself because your advice is not gracious enough to outweigh your own actions to prosper in this country.

Now please take my advice because many and I mean many say that you guys are cornmen instead of clergymen. Time to take a deep look in the mirror and accept what God has shown us the people.
