Our uncle is rolling in his grave — Penn
Eighth District Representative Marlon Penn said one of his ancestors must be rolling in their grave at the state of affairs in the East End/Long Look community during the Emancipation Festival celebrations.
Penn said former District Representative – Leslie Malone – who helped to pilot the Emancipation Festival holidays through the House of Assembly (HOA) is a great uncle he shares with Premier and Seventh District Representative, Dr Natalio Wheatley.
Penn called it a travesty that the cultural observations that started in his community are now no longer depicted.
“Uncle Leslie’s rolling in his grave. Premier, we have to fix this,” Penn said. “We have to get these committees back up and functioning and ensure that the standard that we deserve and grow accustomed to in East End/Long Look is restored,” Penn told a gathering at a cultural event in the community recently.
Penn said it was hard work that brought the ancestors of Nottingham Estate the lands in that community and remarked that it shows the strength and determination of the people.
He called for a strong community involvement which would ensure that the people of the community get the level of a cultural display that was truly representative of the depiction of a free people and people that fought and paved their own way to freedom.
Penn noted that it was important that the people are able to put on a display of their origin, culture and heritage and referenced Marcus Garvey in stating that a people who don’t know their history are like a tree without a root which can neither grow or bear fruit.
Penn said the territory’s leaders have a responsibility to ensure such cultural events remain in place and promised that efforts will be put in place to ensure an improvement for next year’s 70th annual Emancipation Festival celebrations.

The sooner my NDP get rid of this mischief maker who is challenged with the truth as head of the party the better the future of the NDP.
And because of selfish greed in the 1st district, there was two(2)carnivals. That cultural community had no right to set up during the carnival activities. Head coach spoiled them by giving them too much and them still looking hand outs. When are they going to give back to their community? There was no propper official opening of the abandant village site. Again the people there feel that they are entitled to put their personal cars, boats etc on government’s property! All them venders need to go through the same measurements as the ones in town and be regulated by the health department. As for them pop up ones and street hawkers, inland revenu need to see about them. Carrot Bay carnival was out of control. And where is the district REP, like he fed up of them ALREADY!!
Hon Marlon Penn and Premier Wheatley lost my leadership credibility with this. You can do it yourself as district Rep. This was for your people within your district and you could not pull it off.
New generational community leaders must come forward to take over.
So out of all that’s happening in the world and all the fixing that this country needs to catch up with this garbage is what politicians have time to waste on talking about in house of assembly. This country voted for men and women instead of politicians and until we fix this we can’t fix this country.
Marlon the people should have heard from you 2 months ago if anything not now. What efforts did YOU as a 3 term Legislator and rep for the 8th District make to get anything done? You are a f**king waste of time as far as I can see. Over 12 years elected, deputy premier at one point, Minister of Health at one point, Jr Minister of Trade at one point, leader of Opposition at one point and now leader of NDP. NOT ONE SINGLE ACHIEVEMENT UNDER YOUR LEADERSHIP. All you do is complain and shift blame.
Marlon just not ready for leadership any where he was the worse opposition leader ever
He’s a pastor. Maybe he was in church. We live in a cowboy country.
You going to have all of us rolling in graves soon!
*Your Uncle rolling in the grave*?. The dead are not in the grave, They are either in hell or paradise and are no longer in counsciousness about what goes on here on earth. We all know that graves contain mere lifeless phalanges, scapular, tibia, femur, scapular, tarsals etc We are all accountable to the creator of the universe and to him we shall all return to give Account including politicians. *God is rolling in fury in eternity*.
Usual prejudiced and bigotted undertones all in the name of political mileage.
I must agree with you that two days a month community cultural event should not have coincided with the festival event. Matter of fact in my opinion it should just been ONE DAY IN THE MONTH instead of TWO DAYS.
However, the Carrot Bay festival was more cultural than any other event. With very limited funding I believe it was a success. I hope that for the 70th it will get better.
Big yawn,
Only a conman would think that way. What a wasteful and weak human being. NDP has a jacka** bringing the party down.
I gon keep saying for the next four years, BVI voters never make a right or informed decision. They again voted out the good people and voted in the wrong ones.
What progress of any kind have the country seen over the last five?
Nothing has been done for people or country, but they have certainly done for themselves, from greedy bill to heavy reterement packages. Meanwhile, aretired civil servant is still waiting for increments after donkey years. How evil is that?
August Wednesday used to be the FESTIVAL in the 50’s and 60’s. Long Look troops used to come to Road Town to make August Monday parade a Parade. The majorettes started in Long Look by Letecia Thomas. Now August Wednesday is absolete. So we have the Premier and the 8th District rep, both from the East End/Long Look area, and they both have knowledge of the August Wednesday festivities in Greenland field, and these two together are incapable of bringing East End/ Long Look Festival back from the grave. Our cultural survival is not important. All around, our culture, our values, our guiding principles, our ethics that brought us to where we are as a people, “IS DEAD”.
