Over $100K raised for Jamaica, Haiti after Hurricane Melissa

Organisers said the overwhelming show of generosity reflected the compassion of Virgin Islanders and the strong regional ties that unite Caribbean nations during times of crisis.
The event, which brought together local organisations such as the Lions Club, the Red Cross, and the BVI Christian Council, saw steady donations throughout the broadcast, surpassing expectations.
The funds will go toward urgent humanitarian needs in Jamaica and Haiti, both of which were severely affected when Hurricane Melissa tore through the Caribbean last week. The powerful Category 5 storm brought torrential rains, widespread flooding, and destructive winds, flattening homes, destroying infrastructure, and displacing thousands of families in both countries.
The BVI Red Cross said it will launch a separate appeal to assist Cuba, which also sustained damage during Melissa’s passage. However, Rotary officials explained that because of the long-standing United States embargo, their organisation is restricted from sending donations directly to Cuba.
The Red Cross, being an international humanitarian body, is not bound by those restrictions and will therefore handle the Cuba relief independently.
Funds raised through the telethon will be distributed to Rotary and Lions Clubs, as well as Red Cross chapters in Jamaica and Haiti. Those organisations will then use the funds to assist those in both countries.

THAT MONEY WILL NEVER REACH TO WHO NEED IT MOST
RED CROSS are the very reason I didn’t donate to this as thier overheads will take about 40% away from the total. I just gave directly to a worker whos family is in dire need back home
All them monies in the trillions of dollars that the catholic and other church religion embezzled from the poor people promising them a piece a real estate in the sky need to come forward now and pay up.
how no help was raised for the people here
Pure ruth, but they are incapable oof accepting much less acting.
Great show of compassion and support. WE have been there but had the UK to support us in time of need. Now JA has to rely on others for their support. VIslanders – we did good for JA.
After Irma there was a call by the government for private donations. When asked how much was obtained and where it went – nothing. no accounting at all. as expected.
