Parsons slams ‘wukkin up’, vulgarity in festival parade

Eileen Parsons

Former legislator and Virgin Islands cultural icon, Eileene Parsons has once again come out against the unsavoury behaviour of persons involved in the annual Emancipation Festival parade.

Parsons, while speaking on a local radio programme recently, said she wanted to comment on what had become the norm regarding vulgar dancing along the parade route.

According to Parsons, several people have brought the issue to her attention and have questioned the direction in which the BVI is headed.

Wukkin up is not BVI!

The former legislator was troubled by more than simple gyrations and indicated that this was not her only concern about how the parade has degenerated over the years.

Parsons was particularly moved by the involvement of minors in the melee and said one gentleman commented to her that the ‘wukkin up’ is so vulgar and children are made to watch.

“Honestly, what I am seeing with these women bending over, and the men [expertly] wukkin up on them, that is not BVI,” Parsons insisted.

In the process of registering her opprobrium, Parsons added a variation on a recent controversial claim she made about how far back she could trace her bloodline; this time noting that it was “forty generations back” on her grandfather’s side. Parsons expressed that she was proud of her heritage.

How do we let our women/girls go out ‘in that condition’?

A regular feature herself in the August Emancipation Festival parades over the years, Parsons argued that given what is happening now, the BVI must go back to the drawing board with regard to the Festival parade celebrations.

“I don’t want them to change this [Festival] committee,” she added. “The changing of the committee every year is not a good thing. Let them stay so they could process from what happened last year, they could improve on it. There needs to be continuity in the parade.”

“Honestly, what I’m seeing on Road Town streets now would make my grandmother wonder,” Parsons continued. “And I know my grandmother would wonder how parents, husbands and boyfriends could allow their ladies to leave home in that kind of condition. What only they should see, the world is seeing August Monday.”

I agree with her on this one. We even have some local woman who still to this day having sex in the dark, with all them clothes on. Men can’t see above their knees, don’t wear low cut blouses and arm out clothing, that is how the female BVILANDER was raised but due to the intruding of outside females on the competitive side for our male partners, WE had to step up to explicid dressing and behaviours. But again that is necessary for behind close doors ONLY! PERIODT!!

I think the former legislature is speaking from a place of love and care for our young girls and women. Ladies don’t abase yourself for entertainment. Do better next year.

I totally agree with Ms P on this one. I am not from here but I’ve been here a long time and have seen the decline for myself. I have stopped going to the parade a long time now because I found it embarrassing to stand next to my husband and children watching the vulgarity.
I have been saying BVI Festival has a much different meaning from Caribbean carnivals. Unfortunately our Caribbean Brothers and sisters equated the 2. So the Caribbean Carnival culture was introduced. Rise and shine changed to J’ouvert, Mas bands with skimpy costumes replaced the floats and floupes. It is time to separate the two. Have a BVI Festival and allow the Caribbean diaspora to have a carnival if they do wished. But definitely separate them.

    Competition?
Do you live under a rock?
Everything started changing the day we got MTV on our televisions and public behaviour/dress has slowly spiraled ever since.

Have you seen television? Youtube? TikTok? Our kids are making videos about guns, drugs, money and murder. The whole world is telling black youth they should embrace abberant views of sexuality and the value of human life and our unguided children are buying it.

This goes waaay deeper than some sleazy blond divorcee looking for sexual tourism.

We must recognize the source of the problem and solve it constructively.
Like maybe invest in balanced education that instills self pride in all of our kids, not just those who fight for it.

I am so ashamed of the comments these young women have made against Mrs. Parsons. They have no respect for themselves and their elders. The behaviour in witnessed in the parade and what I viewed in the Rise and Shine tramp was entirely degrading to women. I term the actions of these revelers as having sex in the public for young children and elderly persons to see. We also had visitors from other countries. Imagine what was there opinions of the BVI after witnessing such atrocious behaviour. It also leaves a bad impression of the territory as a place to visit. Again, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

I totally agree with Ms P. I found it really disturbing to see women hate themselves so and would stoop to low levels to be acknowledged. It is such a disgrace to our ancestors! (The festival is not for us, it is to honour our ancestors.)

The Festival committee needs to put regulations in place, even if it means using Laws that stipulate being dressed appropriately and lewdness in public places.

Additionally, the noise level from the village needs to be moderated. The music should be of such that persons who live in and around the town area are not disturbed to a great degree. Loud music does not equate with having fun; it correlates with deafness.

Why is it that people are so quick to bash a decent woman who speaks her mind out of pure love for her country? A country that she sees going downhill quickly- like all of us who see the same thing and seldom say anything?
The talk show hosts spoke about the same lack of common decency and decorum during the recently concluded festival celebrations – and nary a word was said about them. Why pick on this courageous national heroine, you set of boasting cowards?
And she is so right. Too many of the women in those tramps were like horny dogs in heat, leaving absolutely nothing for the imagination; some with loads of flab on exhibition. Disgusting!
And as for the men who were humping and jumping behind the females like fowl cocks on the prowl, they need their tails cutting.
Shame on you all with your blatant vulgarity!

Bvislanders grew up among the animal kingdom and so are well aware of the manner in which these animals behave instinctively. Our households were incomplete without dogs and can readily, recognize the behaviour attributed to these creatures.Such was the behaviour of the lower human species during August. Interestingly the subhuman behaviour was consistent with that demographic which is predictable in all
aspects of “less than”.Actions speak louder than words, and denial.

I too agree with Mrs. Parson on this one. Just the other day my family and some friends were discussing this. The level of vulgarity at some of these events was beyond disgusting. It shows that we don’t have much respect for ourselves and for the people around us.

What surprises me most, is how so many of us fail to see how this behaviour does nothing to uplift us or the community on a whole. We claim to be celebrating freedom from slavery. Yes the shackles from our hands and feet have been removed but our minds are still in bondage. We have adopted some behaviour that are not reflective of culture. The most appalling issue I have is the women and young girls who seem to bask in this type behaviour. As mothers, grandmothers, auties, sisters and female cousins we should be uplifting each other not trying to ruin it. Once again let us work on freeing our minds from this type of mental slavery it does nothing for us. Let us work on bettering ourselves and in turn we will be better people and have a better society.

Jouvert has been ongoing in this country for a very long time. We don’t have a problem with jouvert. The problem that we have is the kind of disgusting behaviour being demonstrated in the street during this time. We are not the most holy land, but cocking our back side in the air and shaking it in front of a camera while half naked and all the dry humping of men and women and even women and women was absolutely disgusting. Our children are looking and to e more explicit, your children are watching their mothers, aunties, sisters act like sluts in the street. Simple decency seems to be out of style. God help us all. I refuse to take part with this kind of action. And women, if you want to act like naked sl… in the street, at least visit the gym. Most of you all are out of shape. Disgusting.
