Past governments refused to fix asphalt plant

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has once again blamed the state of the territory’s roads on previous administrations, saying past leaders failed to purchase vital parts for the asphalt plant that was needed for road repairs.

The Premier gave the utterance in the House of Assembly on September 19 while mentioning that the asphalt plant has been commissioned and will soon begin repaving damaged roads across the territory.

He said the commissioning of the plant “is a big deal” for his government, especially since past administrations failed to act and kept the plant out of operation for a long time.

“We were without an asphalt plant for some time and had to buy asphalt privately. The cost of that would only allow us to do so much. But now with the asphalt plant we’ll be able to produce more asphalt, do overlays and patching on a more frequent basis to allow our roads to be more drivable,” Premier Wheatley stated.

He continued: “We recognize that the roads are in poor condition but the Minister of Communications and Works had to come in and buy all the equipment that we needed. The governments that were there before did not leave him with any equipment to use and he had to purchase all the equipment which took a while to get here,” Wheatley stated.

Dr Wheatley went on to reiterate that the state of the roads is partly due to the lack of drainage infrastructure that past administrations failed to construct over the years. And as the cries grow louder for road repairs to commence, the Premier described the “bad roads” as the “bad cards” his administration has been dealt.

In the meantime, residents across the territory are anticipating smooth roads and ease of travel in the coming months as the Department of Public Works gets ready to put the asphalt plant to work.

Director at the Public Works Department, Jeremy Hodge said the plant was successfully handed over to the department from the machine industry company Ammann and is a major achievement the government and people should be proud of.

“We are now better equipped to build road infrastructure that we can truly be proud of. Our commitment to addressing all the roads in the territory in a holistic manner remains unwavering. Rest assured, we will continue to prioritise the improvement of the road infrastructure in the foreseeable future,” the Director said.

  4. Did you ever ask WHY? says:

Asphalt Plant – purchased and no not working?
There is one sitting in Virgin Gorda too. It is overgrown by weeds in an abandoned lot across from Old Yard. Purchased by the BVI governments and now dead. The system is broken.
SO, Now you hear to FIX it by buying another Asphalt Plant!?
If all you do is blame the last guy, I think there is 100% chance that the Asphalt Plant is going to end up in an abandoned lot with weeds growing on it 5 years from now when you are out of office!
Stop kicking the can. You need to FIX the roads department! The asphalt plant is not going to run and fix itself.
These governments too focused on shinny objects and spending money. This is a case where we need some real work done. FIX THE ROADS. Seems to happen everywhere else in the world but the BVI. Why?

So you purchased from, Ammann, Manufacture of asphalt mixing plants
    Q. Where is Ammann equipment made?
    A. SHANGHAI, CHINA
Maybe the reason that the old governments didn’t repair the Asphalt Plant was that it was crap that could not be fixed after it was used for 2 years!?

  15. This is the worst says:

This is the worse and most dangerous Premier. He is more dangerous than his ex boss who was arrested in Miami, USA. The whole damn Territory is broken and crumbling. Well guess what, you guys picked your poison. You guys knew he was … and had no experience in what it takes to drive a go cart, the man … even run a simple house budget but he is holding a Financial Portfolio. Sip your poison and deal with it the best way you can. At this point, you either sink or swim. A whole lot of you is going to sink before you can be able to swim. In the BVI, you are a have or a have not and the haves rules.

  18. Jerrard says:

It seems like all he expected to meet was lots of money to give his friends. However, he went on the podium making promises to do things he has no knowledge how to do.

I want to know if the intention is to full the same pot holes weekly because what they are doing makes no damn sense and the blind could see that.

They put down some stuff hon a road at Jennings hill today and I will monitor that to see how long it remains. It looks like they ran out of material because nothing is properly done.

  19. ONLY A FEW WORDS says:

even if you get a good asphalt plant and don’t have the people with the experience or knowledge to operate it properly , we will only be going around in circles ( we need a expert to show the workers how it’s done / but then again we might think he coming to take over the country , so that would be more problems again ( too much IGNORAMUSES loose in the country

  20. No joke says:

The Premiership should be turned over to Lorna seeing she is the one with the sense and knowledge. She is the only one that went on a official meeting to Guyana produced receipts and informed the public of said meetings. The woman even give up her seat to a staff member and sat at the back of the plane with two dogs. That is a true leader. That man would have never done that because he think he is to good.

  21. Exactly says:

They always seems to think if a expert from the outside comes in to show the MUMUS how to work and properly maintain the machine, you will hear that they are coming to take over. Not such a thing. In two months the damn machine will be broken.
