Government has contracted Wesley Penn of Accurate Construction to build nine homes under its Housing Recovery Assistance Programme.

A media release from government said Penn’s company was awarded the contract after what is being called a ‘competitive tender process’ conducted by Development Alternatives Incorporated.

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Ministry of Health and Social Development sanctioned the initiative.

Meanwhile, government has also acquired building supplies for their housing programme, which is aiming to repair up to 30 homes in the territory.

“The Housing Recovery Assistance Programme functions in accordance with the Virgin Islands Housing Recovery Policy and Hurricane Irma Housing Recovery Plan 2017 to 2019,” government said.

The programme targets residents who were left most vulnerable after the hurricanes.

Persons interested in the programme must apply by May 31, government said.

The total number of houses reported damaged or destroyed during Hurricane Irma stood at 4,240 up to the end of September. That is according to a report presented by the Department of Disaster Management and the National Emergency Operations Centre.

The report further said roughly 22.5 percent of the territory’s population was displaced when Hurricane Irma hit.

The 2010 Population and Housing Census Report said the territory has a population of 28,054.

Editor’s Note:

Persons can obtain applications for housing recovery assistance at the Old Peebles Hospital, the Social Development Department across from the Red Cross building in Road Town, or the District Offices on the sister islands.

  7. okay says:

Can we know the persons who homes will be fixed with this money?

  8. Come on says:

Now whose idea was it for one man or one company to get 9 houses to fix. Couldn’t the buildings be shared among several contractors? This doesn’t even sound like sense. When will he finish all of them? Today is May 17 and there should be a rush to get things done plus be fair to all the competitors.

    • oh yeah says:

To Come On they said up to thirty houses will be fixed he is only doing nine. Other contractors will get once they win the bids. I don’t see any unfairness in that. It was good for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office so it was done the right way. The only contractors who are afraid of the bidding process will see a problem with this. You all asked for this fairness opportunity for and that what is happening.

  9. Rigged system says:

It’s rigged it tell yah!!! Just like other companies the locals evaluating have ulterior motives; hence the same old tired builders keep getting recycled and the quality of work going down/

  10. Ex expat says:

Wesley Penn always did as he said in full when he contracted all types of work at Peebles hospital. He was one of few that took contracts seriously and didn’t throw be longer status in our face.
Proud for Wesley and the people should be as well. Jesse.

  12. Bull says:

Only in the BVI can this — get work from Government again while others who are honestly working cant get work or a fair chance to get a Government contract.
