Penn protests doorless shower stalls at Long Bay beach

The shower stalls at Long Bay Beach, Beef Island.

Eighth District Representative Marlon Penn has criticised the government for lacking proper shower facilities at Long Bay Beach, Beef Island.

The beach is a popular tourist destination, with a third of all cruise pier arrivals visiting the location. Speaking in the House of Assembly recently, Penn took direct aim at the absence of shower stall doors for the facilities.

“We right now are plagued with a makeshift shower thing which the vendors decide to put up and install,” Penn told the HOA. “I begged and I pleaded and I begged for months to do something more substantial not just for the tourists but for our people who go there every day.”

Penn argued that the lack of doors on the shower stalls creates privacy concerns, particularly for women and young children.

“If one of our young women, God forbid, wants to go up there and shower, they have to be exposed to the elements without a door, no privacy,” he stated.

He questioned the government’s spending priorities, arguing they could find funds for other expensive but less essential projects. “They refuse to put doors on the shower stalls because it costs too much money,” Penn said. “But you could be down behind filling in a cay out the Tourist Board money… You can’t build the product that you’re responsible for to provide a safe environment for your guests and our BVIslanders who use that beach.”

Penn highlighted that the area is frequented by families, including Deputy Speaker Stacey ‘Buddha’ Mather, who he said visits on Saturdays “with tonnes of children; young children who might need some privacy”.

Why we need showers there? What happened to going to the beach like normal ppl an washing in the sea when you leave. this aint a city. enjoy nature as it is. if you really need a shower, why you need doors? it aint like you need to wear less in the shower than you do on the beach.

It was a more beautiful place before we sold out to the cruise companies so a very few of us got very rich. We didn’t need showers at the beach before they turned up. So many other things got worse for us too.

  3. Really says:

It makes sense to me because it’s nothing but sick pedophiles who own these million dollar companies. The ELITES own long bay they believe in raping kids, and transgenders. Trust me when I say it’s going to be all over for the New World order

I don’t take my family near that beach. To many perverts out here walking around and lurking. There should be doors on those shower stalls that can be locked from the inside once the stalls is being used for privacy. What is wrong with you people in this place?

This is the problem. They always are quick to build a big monument and very slow to improve our quality of life by consistent simple improvements.

If they could pave the streets gold they would do it, and at the same time not install a sidewalk.

    • Butt says:

If they did built a sidewalk they’d insist on painting it that disgusting yellow. Why paint them? I travel a lot and don’t see that elsewhere. Nobody maintains them. They are waaaay too high. Ed just can’t do simple things right.

This is why I have no problem with any of the past or future grants to private businesses because government knows how to waste our money on big structures that over run by millions of dollars.

Who are we to pull down our people when they get a few thousand once or twice in a lifetime. They always talk about fishers & farmers grants but those people are ignorant.

They are ignorant to the fact that 1100 businesses got grants and those businesses were not fishers or farmers, they ranged from electricians, giftshops, financial services, to fisherman & farmers.

It was not just one lump to fishers & farmers. All businesses were told to apply and the call went out over the radio that there was room for more.

So at the end of the day why are some still complaining about fishers & farmers talking about 40million, the fishers & farmers only got around 9 million but I could be off by a few million, no worries that happens all the time!

By covid PANIC looking like the plague & mandatory vaccines… keeping those people in business was a very smart decision as the plague evolved with no end in sight.

Much better than a new airport or new marina what’s next.

  9. Beach says:

showers are always open door because the person in the shower is wearing a swim suit. There is no need for privacy in a outdoor beach shower!

These showers are NOT for changing clothes or anything else. Doors cut off the air circulation in the shower block that usually results in bacterial infections due to the damp environment.

Showers on the beach are for washing the sand off your body not naked showers WTF. Is that the feeble crap you have to desperately grasp for political points?

  11. Mr Shovels says:

Hon Penn you should know better. A beach shower is usually just a communal standpipe so you can wash the salt off, not somewhere to lock up and take a 30-minute bath. the fact that we have individual stalls should the considered a luxury

    • SMH says:

Exactly! Why shower doors being a topic? It’s not a toilet! Shower stalls are for rinsing off seawater and sand, not changing stalls. Please, individuals having common sense would have another person shield them with a towel or some sort of covering. Geeze! Give me a break with this nonsense. Stop bickering about p**s and get the government to do what is required and needed.

Shaking spots available for night use lol the beach up one now…just pull up

  18. Guest says:

These facilities on a beach are usually not intended for the users to take full showers but moreso to rinse off the seawater and sand. And this is usually done wearing the same beachwear one would have been walking around on the beach in.

  19. Smh says:

    Penn pay for the doors

  20. HE LEFT ALL POTHOLES says:

In the road and wrnt on the beach / or took a helicopter to the beach / looks like the side effects from the COI is really causing RETARDATION in truth

  21. Ausar says:

    Naaaaahhh!

    Shower doors are needed!

Perhaps, there are persons who only wish to wash sand off, and are satisfied.

What about others, who need to fully change, to go to work, and other areas of society, where a sandied body, would be considered abhorrent?

You know, it’s always the “better- educated”, who seemingly lack the skills necessary, for the understanding of mundane activities, of the common man!

  22. Use your senses says:

    Mr Penn is correct
Some of you do not travel and only know gricks and sand
This area is one of the tourism destinations
Is this the best we can do
How can one lead effectively by miscalculating millions of dollars
Like all of us in the BVI only like RECESs

    What a mistake!!

  23. Real VI Icon says:

He my boy but that shower isn’t for J or the Spanish woman to bathe. It is simply for them to wash off the sand after they ready to leave the beach. When you go to the beach and swim, sand usually gets trapped in your swim trunks and swimsuit and when you reach home sand is everywhere. The shower is just to get a quick rinse off. If you want to bathe you go your @$$ home and use your shower. The public facilities aren’t supposed to have a hot tub and jacuzzi neither are you supposed to get buck naked.

  24. @AUSAR says:

Wigo boi you really getting more wacky someone going to work and goes to take a sea bath and and wants to wash up before going to work , so they ain’t live any ❓️ are fir real ? You talk di much evilness that you don’t even realize how stupid you sound / throw that moldy wig in the gabbage bro / oh you can always blame the UK or the COI DUHHHHH

  25. Lodger says:

Looks to me as if they are not actually finished yet. The standpipe for the shower, if it is to be a shower, is outside the cubicle. Somost of these comments are premature.

  26. Really? says:

I mean yes doors would be nice but look at the state of the BVI! This is what you making noise about? How much pot hole we must drop in before we even get to the beach to worry about not having privacy in a public facility.

  27. This man don’t travel. says:

The showers are to merley clean the salt and sand off. It helps the taxi drivers by alleviating cleaning sand from their vehicles, it’s not for bathing with soap and water

  28. Wtf says:

Marlon, Really? That is all ypu see wrong in Tortola? The bathrooms on the beach don’t have doors? What a f**king fool. Where in the world did you travel and see the bathrooms on a beach with doors? Some are just a shower stall, don’t even have walls. Where did we get these idiots from to put in government. I am sure the structure there as it is cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Whose pockets were lined?
