People aren’t equipped to discuss BVI’s future — Wheatley

Dr Charles Wheatley

Veteran educator Dr Charles Wheatley has called for members of the community to raise their consciousness and equip themselves with the knowledge to discuss the territory’s current political status and development.

Speaking at a recent public forum held to discuss the constitutional review exercise, Dr Wheatley said he has noticed that many residents can’t contribute to conversations about BVI’s political development because they have no knowledge of the constitution — which should be their roadmap.

“While we are thinking about moving on to another stage in our self-determination journey, keep in mind that it is imperative that we also make sure that all the consciousness of our people is heightened. Education-wise but not just academic only, but education in general. So that they are really in tune with what is happening because the constitution is their guide in the territory and they need to understand really how it affects their lives and that it is something that affects all of us,” Dr Wheatley said.

The long-time educator also urged persons at the forum and the wider public to get a copy of the constitution and read it to understand the discussions that are being had to decide on the way forward for the BVI.

“That’s the reason a number of you are not even mentioning much tonight because you have not really devoted enough times studying the document to really give inform comments. But, you still have time to do that so collect the documents tonight look at them read them and maybe you have some opinions that you would like to submit,” Dr Wheatley stated.

Residents have been calling for improvements in the way the territory is governed. But those leading the constitutional review process continue to call for more people to participate in the review process to ensure the next constitution reflects the changes they want to see.

At one of the CRs they posted a question to my comment and I asked them to educate me on the difference.

The Constitutional Review members have to realize that they are scholars, doctors, lawyers, etc… speaking to ordinary citizens who are just giving suggestions and comments.

The Constitutional Review members have to realize that they are scholars, doctors, lawyers, etc… speaking to mostly ordinary citizens at these meetings who are just giving suggestions and comments.

The problem with people not being equipped with discussing the BVI ‘ future lies right the feet of the education system. It also a community problem. Oh, how I long for the hood old days of the Village but modernity slaughtered the village. Why was civics eliminated from the school system. The constitution should have been taught in primary and secondary school. What a lost. Dr wheatley is holding a book but the article does not say any thing about the book. What about the book? Is it if we had read the book we would be better equip to discuss the constitution? True, BVI residents are not readers and it shows. The are easily given a 6 for a 9. Or jobs that they should be capable of doing, labour has to be imported to do. The metrics bear this out. So if the BVI people are not equipped to discuss the BVI future, who will develop the frame work to negotiate a framework with the UK. I guess the professionals and paraprofessionals on the CRC will have to do it? If Dr. Wheatley is correct why even continue with the CRC meetings?

  5. Wtf says:

Who the hell is he to tell us we are not equipped
    to make decisions?!! How arrogant!
We are a basically moral population who have
been led by amoral politicians. We know exactly
what to do and why. If Dr Warner doesn’t know
that, maybe it is him and his friends that need
    to be equipped.

That’s all the equipment we need. The BVI is in a bad bad Mess. It took us twent years to get to this messy point, along the way of gradual decline you all didn’t had the wisdom and courage to call the government out. Now it’s this bad, it’s convenient for all of you to blame the Governor and Britain. Sad.

  7. Logical Question for WTF says:

If we are a moral population, how do we come to elect amoral politicians? Several times at that.

The average person lives in confusion. This is why there is so much sickness related to stress anxiety and other lifestyle issues. We need to stop trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. There are so many persons who are invested in the lie that its proverbially easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for the majority to come clean.
The Babylon System promotes prostitution corruption bribery stealing. Unless we change the narrative and with it our moral values expect more of the same.
