Scores of people gathered on Saturday, June 22, for the funeral service of the BVI’s first local police commissioner, Vernon Malone, who passed away last month at the age of 76.

Several officials, including members of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, Premier Dr. Natalio Wheatley, Deputy Premier Lorna Smith, and other past and present legislators, attended the service.

Those who spoke at the funeral service highlighted a common aspect of the late Malone: he was considered a true patriot with a deep love for his country.

Malone was renowned for being the first Virgin Islander to become Commissioner of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force. He was also a former member of the House of Assembly. Malone had an extensive career in public service. He began as a pupil teacher before moving on to his lifelong career as a police officer. He joined the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) in 1968 as a constable and rose through the ranks, serving as corporal, sergeant, inspector, deputy commissioner, and commissioner of police in 1992. Malone also had a stint in the Attorney General’s Chambers upon completing his law degree from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus.

The former top cop was laid to rest at a private plot in Brewer’s Bay.

Sometimes its all about the optics and the truth, the truth is not missing like some disappearing evidence or hurt and beaten like a teenager by a grown man.

The optics of seeing bearded men in uniform is so disgusting and unsightly. I missed seeing Roy Stoutt, Pico and My superstar Dean Fahie. The photographer must have done a poor job not to include the said gents, Martian stole the show. RIP VEM.
