Government Information Service (press release) – Deputy Premier and Minister for Natural Resources and Labour, Dr. the Honourable Kedrick Pickering is attending a three day Small Island Developing States symposium in Nassau, Bahamas.

The symposium is being held from February 20 to 22, and will discuss “Implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the SAMOA Pathway in Small Island Developing States (SIDS): Equipping Public Institutions and Mobilizing Partnerships.”

The event was organised by the Government of the Bahamas, with the support of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA).

Minister Pickering said the sustainable development of the Territory has always been an essential part of the order of the Government and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour.

The Minister said, “Our Territory is composed of small islands and when small islands come together to create one voice it is then we can be heard. As we work together to achieve international goals, the result reverberates into local efforts, whether they come in the form of assistance through training, testing or consultations, our international goals for small islands always directly impact our small Virgin Islands.”

Minister Pickering added that the issues that are faced in each Territory are not very different and banding together to address these issues and to come up with practical solutions has always been beneficial to the Territory.

The symposium will reflect on the special vulnerabilities of SIDS to the adverse impacts of climate change and natural disasters. It will also provide a platform for decision-makers and stakeholders to reflect on how they can further integrate the 2030 Agenda and the SIDS Accelerated Modalities of Action (SAMOA) Pathway in national plans, policies, strategies and public institutions.

Special emphasis will be placed on how best to equip public institutions and mobilize partnerships and cooperation for realising the 2030 Agenda and SAMOA, in the context of SIDS national priorities.

Participants are expected to come from a variety of areas including planning, public administration, health, education, economic and finance, the environment, disaster management as well as institutions that are directly responsible for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and statistical offices.

The Minister is accompanied by Mr. Benito Wheatley, Director of the London Office.

Following the symposium Minister Pickering will travel to Jamaica to attend the 10th International Labour Organisation (ILO) Meeting of Caribbean Ministers from February 22 through 24.
