Police arrest two illegal immigrants during traffic stop

BVI News understands that the police recently detained two illegal immigrants after encountering them during a regular traffic stop.

It’s understood that the men were driving in a car in Road Town when the police signalled them to stop for a routine check. During the exercise, the cops noticed that a few traffic rules were being broken and advised the men to make adjustments.

During the interaction, the cops realized that the men were spanish speakers. It’s reported that the cops also learned that the men are Venezuelans — one arrived in the BVI some time in 2022 and the other landed late last year.

The police asked the men to show their identification documents and that’s when they realized (from their passports) that the men entered the territory legally but had both overstayed their time by several months.

They were both detained and an immigration officer was reportedly called in to assist in processing them.

It’s unclear whether the men were jailed or whether they are being housed by the authorities as they await court appearance and deportation.

I am excited to see that the officers are FINALLY out and about doing what they needed to do from long. But they need to do the same thing in Virgin Gorda, Anegada & Jost Van Dyke because those islands has illegal immigrants as well. Kudos to the RVIPF.

  7. Interesting says:

So this means Immigration has ZERO SYSTEMS in place to track these things. They should have a system that automatically flags anybody that entered and didn’t leave when their time is up to do so. If the Police didn’t stop these men they would’ve still been on the streets. How many more do we have out here undocumented? How long can we continue running this place like this? We are bitching about locals when it comes to the Census but cannot handle serious issues like this?

  9. Over stepping. says:

Police doing traffic stop has no legal right to ask anyone about their immigration status, no matter what language they speak.Police need an immigration officer alongside them in order to conduct such stop and ask such questions.

At overstepping…yes they can. Don’t need an immigration officer to be present but once an immigration violation is detected they are duty bound to inform immigration.

  10. Iceberg Tip says:

    Plenty plenty more ..prison escapees,murderers.
An immigrant hub such as this, legal and illegal this lil BVI,routine stops and ID should be the norm…after awhile, strangers would be identifiable.

Didn’t Mrs Parsons initiate an ID card?
