Police confirm attempted abduction, 4 nabbed for guns

The incident in which two assailants where injured in East End last Saturday was in connection with an attempted kidnapping, the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force has confirmed.
Jointly charged with attempted abduction with intent, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and obliterating or defacing identifying marks on a firearm are Alanah Chalwell of East End, and Nyall Giovanni George of Old Plantation.
“In this incident that could easily have resulted in even more injuries and possible deaths, both the community and police interceded bringing about these successful arrests and the recovery of a loaded firearm,” police said in a media statement on Friday.
They were remanded after their appearance in the Magistrate’s Court this week.
Other arrests are forthcoming in this matter, police added.
Police said the accused duo make up two of four persons who were arrested for gun-related offences since the start of the festival season.
Thirty-nine-year-old Hannah’s Estate resident Dion Thomas, and 22-year-old Jamori Hart of Parham Town are the other two facing unrelated gun charges.
Thomas was charged with carrying a firearm without a licence and two counts of unlawful possession of ammunition. Police said they uncovered the weapon during a stop and search on Monday.
Hart was charged with keeping an unlicenced firearm in a separate incident, police said.
Commenting on the arrests, Acting Commissioner of Police Alwin James said: “Our festival celebrations could have been diisrupted and very unsettling had any of these confiscated weapons been discharged, injuring or killing someone … We are very happy with the outcome, but we cannot overemphasize the need for community to work with Police in bringing persons carrying firearms to justice. All hands must be on deck,” James said.

This is the kind of news I like to read and hear of in our little BVI. Too many have lost their lives to guns,both young and old fell victim to gun violence. Some of those crimes touched many of us, especially the youngest victim from last November. Regardless of what some people say, I commend the RVIPF on a job well done and I hope and pray that they can tackle some of the unsolved crimes that still lay heavy burdens on our hearts.
