Police targets uninsured vehicles

The following is a media release from the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF).

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force carried out yet another operation aimed at targeting unlicensed and uninsured vehicles and scooters early this past Friday at the Queen Elizabeth Bridge at Beef Island for persons who have escaped normal stop searches.

The Road Policing Unit joined by the Armed Response Team issued 63 tickets total for various traffic offences of which 61 were violations under Seatbelt and Cellular Phone Regulation.

Eighteen committed chargeable offences including driving without a driver’s licence, an unlicensed and uninsured vehicle, and driving with a prohibitive tint. Four motor scooters were detained in the operation.

Head of the team Sergeant Kishon Leslie noted that drivers are deliberately refusing to register, licence and insure their vehicles likely in an effort to avoid the expense.

He noted that expensive car repairs and injuries to the drivers, occupants and other road users will far exceed that of the insurance premium.

He stated that these offences are serious under the traffic laws and will become part of a person’s permanent record. He noted that the individuals with chargeable offences will also be prosecuted.

Go down Cane and set up at the west end. You’ll have your ticket books empty in record time. Tons of vehicles there with no registrations, insurance.
