Police Welfare chairman rejects calls for Collins’ resignation

Police Commissioner Mark Collins

Chairman of the Police Welfare Association (PWA) Dean Robin has rejected calls for the resignation of Police Commissioner Mark Collins and condemned what he described as attacks on the top cop’s integrity.

Robin, a Chief Inspector attached to the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF), said a private petition by RVIPF members that was sent to the Governor and made public last week, stirred controversy and expressed damning allegations against the top cop.

In a petition that outlined more than 50 allegations, Collins was accused of misconduct, abuse of power, interference with justice, abuse of office, and violations of fundamental rights, among other things.

But even as he declined to offer evidence to counter the allegations against Collins, Robin emphasised the need for thoughtfulness and due process in handling the matter.

A 20-year veteran of the RVIPF, Robin said some officers who countersigned the petition were unaware of the fullness and severity of the matter at the time of signing.

Robin further suggested that officers have become frustrated by some of the challenges encountered in executing their job.

“Given the nature of our daily duties and our overarching responsibilities to the BVI community which we serve, we often experience inordinate levels of frustration when matters do not progress in the way that we envision or when the outcomes do not align with what we perceive to be fair,” Robin argued.

He also highlighted the frustration and helplessness that led to the petition and suggested it was an attempt to force an examination of some processes for change and improvement.

The Chief Inspector said he strongly rejected the maligning of Commissioner Collins’ character and the unsubstantiated personal attacks in the petition. Robin praised Collins for his integrity and what he described as the top cop’s astute leadership, and decision-making skills.

“I am, therefore, well-positioned to observe and assess his ethics and leadership and am of the view that the myriad of allegations detailed in the petition are unfounded,” the PWA Chairman stated.

Robin conceded that there was a need for greater transparency and efficiency within the RVIPF and said he stands ready to support those efforts.

Uncle Tom. No wonder black people cant progress. Look at this. The commissioner is a known deceitful and dishonest person and a black man runs to support him. I doubt he would have done that for one of his own.

No wonder the crime and murder cases are so high. The BVI has gone to the dogs. And we like to cry about outsiders, but how many locals do we see stepping up with something better to offer??? Many rather rant and rave online, but contribute nothing to society.

  3. Criticism says:

Some officers just object to doing their job. We need Police on the street and responding quickly to calls for help. Changes are needed and some don’t like that, so they attack their boss. Shape up or ship out objecting officers!

EXACTLY! With a bunch of fat a** police in there. They know they wouldn’t even be accepted like that in their countries. When someone wants them to work they see fault, when they were sitting all the time they didn’t see any.

The officer did say there was a need for “greater transparency and efficiency” in the force. I think that is need throughout the entire public service.

This COP done seize more cocaine that anybody before him, he done find more bad cops than anybody else, he make the rest of them work on weekends to keep the stations open, he the only one who arrest and charge ministers and government officials for wrongdoing. I not surprised it got people who don’t like him and want him gone. He too disruptive to the status quo.

  6. If I laugh I dead. says:

The question that bvinews need to asked the Chief Inspector is whether or not he signed the petition. Let me answer that question for you. He signed the petition and agreed in principle all the allegations and also the removal of the Commissioner, then turn around to condemn the said petition he signed and now rubbing shoulders with the CoP. Well if this is not being disingenuous and dishonest, then hell fire must be cold as ice.

Shame on you for your ignorance. By signing the Petition means you agree. Stop talking Piss. No wonder BVI in such a mess. If you wanted to make sense Don”t sign the Petition But write a letter to the Governor stating why You didn’t sign and outline your reasons not the other way around. This just make you look incompetent and Welfare Chairman to Booth? I wonder how you are even able to perform in your position as Chair of the Welfare Committee. In reading this news just made me smh.

  10. Hot Seat says:

There is an unconfirmed notion that the present Chairman of the PWA was promised the position of Acting superintendent sometime next year and because of this promise, he now decided to write to the Governor to please the COP who has the power to place him in the acting role. Well if this is not kiss a** then the world is not round. I think he should step down from the position of PWA chairman and fight for his own self serving agenda. Be a man and do the right thing. Throw in the towel and save whatever integrity you have left, that is if you are left with any after you wrote that letter to the Governor representing your own interest.
