Port Purcell to get new boutique hotel

A new development is set to add to the aesthetics of the Port Purcell community, with a new agreement that the government signed with local developers, JOMA Properties Ltd.

JOMA is a BVI company that has been operating in the Virgin Islands since 1937. The company’s portfolio includes office buildings, warehouse complexes and marina facilities on Tortola.

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley said the agreement with JOMA covers a new-build, 65-room boutique hotel, complete with restaurant, bar, retail shop, fitness centre and more, as well as an upgrade of the marina facilities in the Port Purcell area.

“This is a significant investment by JOMA, and it illustrates what we have been saying all along: the BVI is pregnant with opportunities, and there are investors who have a lot of confidence in the BVI economy and our prospects for economic growth,” Premier Wheatley said. “I wish to thank JOMA for the confidence they are showing in the country and the economy by choosing to invest in these major development projects at this time.”

The Premier said JOMA’s renderings and development plans are very impressive, and when completed, the new facilities will transform the area which presently consists of warehouse-type structures.

Premier Wheatley also said a number of jobs will be created, adding that JOMA has committed to using local contractors and subcontractors and local labour, as much as possible.

“These developments create opportunities to support business development and entrepreneurship. They will create job opportunities when the facilities are completed and opened for business,” Premier Wheatley added.

He also pointed out that the new hotel will complement the expansion of the runway at the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport which is expected to increase the demand for accommodation.

Opposition members as well as the general public have been calling for the government to invest more in tourism, the territory’s second biggest revenue earner. The Premier said he is expanding the BVI’s array of tourism products and diversifying the industry.

He said the aim is to increase business in the areas that have traditionally been engaged and develop the territory’s profile as a destination for meetings, conferences, exhibitions, live music events and music festivals, among others.

  2. Boutique??? says:

What does this even mean. Typically serving a very small class of guests. In port Purcell that is likely to be drop outs, druggies, and the like. I can’t see tourists or business visitors wanting to stay there!

But a port normally consists of warehouse structures and not boutique hotels.

the whole of miami (south east Fl)is water related __ cruise ships / cargo ships AND HOTELS WHATS YOUR POINT ?
JOMA ( O Neals ) GOT money —- They might cater to water based tourism — Those ppl who rent vessels for a week or more ( sailing vacations ) are NOT cheap –This hotel might NOT be for the “joes” who want a room for a ONE night stand — Lets congralate the JOMA group for VISION and taking the RISK to invest in this country ( neighborhood )

more POWER to the O Neals on this HUGE project

  5. Boutique Hotel??? says:

JOMA Properties are modern and attractive and they do a fairly good job at maintaining their properties. The question is, will this property be operated and maintained by the government??? What sets this facility apart from Treasure Isle, Moorings Mariner Inn or Maria’s By The Sea? What is the occupancy of those other facilities? TORTOLA is not a land based destination for tourism! The outer islands are ideal.(Peter, VG, Anegada) Jost Van Dyke for example would be ideal for an upscale resort with ocean vistas and infinity pools aside from the attraction of White Bay, Foxy’s & sandy cay/spit. Unless we had a proper stadium for hosting sporting events or International trade/boat shows having more hotels with empty rooms doesn’t make sense. We are not like Trinidad where people travel here for carnival. That is a once a year event. If we had a calendar booked with monthly events that would make more sense. If there is a plan reveal it or you’ll frustrate the populace.

Why can’t BVI gov’t leave the public sector alone and focus on governing itself. Always change, no progress. Less bragging, more roads, schools, hospitals!
