Preliminary designs for new West End port to be made public this week

Preliminary conceptual designs for a new West End port facility will be presented to the public this week.

Officials will produce these designs at a public meeting to discuss the redevelopment of the West End Ferry Terminal. The meeting will be held at 7 pm at the Leonora Deville Primary School on Tuesday, April 2.

“The meeting is to ultimately construct a new modern passenger and light cargo port at West End with the input of the community as we strive to be inclusive in all of our endeavours,” said Premier Andrew Fahie who is also representative of the First District where the port facility is located.

He further said the meeting is in keeping with his government’s agenda to ‘provide resilient infrastructure by carrying out a complete review of the current sea transportation system, including all ports of entry’.

The West End port is said to be a strong revenue-earner for the territory as it relates to facilitating public ferries between Tortola and the neighbouring United States Virgin Islands.

It has been closed to the public since the September 2017 disasters and has only been accepting private maritime traffic.

CH2Mhill not only designed but provided construction drawings. Went out to bid and an offshore company was within projected costs. However project was slated to go to T****n and his bid was $10 mil over the offshore company. Soooo the project was scarped. Please explain

CH2MHill design was basically flawed. It was designed in Florida by people who seemed to forget that we are in the BVIs. The design would have fit in Florida but for here it was too big, uneconomic, ignored the fact that bulkheads would have needed to go down 40 feet below the seabed and overestimated the usage. It looked like an Orlando mall. We need local architects to do this. Look at Soper’s Hole for a development that looks like what someone expects when they arrive in the BVIs. Nobody would have photographed the CH2MHill building, thousands did/do that at Soper’s.

My understanding is that it is a temporary facility. The permanent facility will include restaurants and gift shops etc.
