Premier asks for more patience over delayed increment payments

More patience is being requested of public servants who are yet to receive payments of their long outstanding salary increments.

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley made the appeal last week during a press conference where he was questioned over the reason for the significant delay, despite an announcement months ago that funds were made available in the budget by his government for the payment of the increments.

Premier Wheatley said although the payment of increments now falls squarely under the remit of the Governor and Deputy Governor, he wants those affected to know that officials are working hard at delivering on the payments.

According to Dr Wheatley, Deputy Governor, David Archer Jr, was doing a good job of keeping the public updated as it pertains to the progress in processing the increments. He further noted that Archer, along with the Department of Human Resources, are trying their best to ensure increments are paid in a timely fashion.

“I just ask – I know that persons have needs, they expect their increments – persons should understand that we are committed to ensuring that they get their increments and just to have just a little more patience,” Premier Wheatley said.

Meanwhile, Premier Wheatley said his Cabinet had earlier made a decision that increment payments were not to be delayed as a result of incomplete appraisals for public servants.

However, he said he understood the need for the completion of the appraisals before the increment payments.

“I completely understand the reason why we’re pushing to ensure that the appraisals are done,” the Premier said. “I understand that, but you know, those types of challenges will lead to the increments being paid less quickly than we had originally anticipated in the Cabinet decision.”

Premier Wheatley also shared that he is aware that some of the increment calculations needed are particularly for persons who have changed positions within the public service.

He further commented that this has contributed to what he described as some lack of speed in the delivery of increments.

  1. Lies says:

Why wasn’t this mentioned in his campaign. How can you promise increments without first running the process by the governor /deputy governor since it would fall under them. A promise should be based on truths and facts. They were promised and need to be paid. Patience for what again when they been patient for years already? Put pressure on the governor/deputy instead.

  2. Huh says:

I thought that government employees called their pay increases increments because they are paid irrespective of performance or appraisal! If performance was a criteria then many government employees would need to pay part or all of their salary back!

  7. asking? says:

Are statutory boards included in obtaining such increments or not? If not, was this one of the reasons the government placed certain entities such as Hospital, bvi electricity and Ports authority under a statutory sysgem to avoid paying increments to the staff? I simply ask this because my statutory board claims that they no longer give increments. That is very depressing!

  17. Patience is No More For Some says:

Patience? Where does one who has been ravaged financially throughout his entire teaching career find patience from in his sunset years?

Where does one who has yet to receive his fair earnings of increments find the patience from, when for eighteen full years he was systematically, and with conniving evil, denied his lawful increments? Where does one find the patience now to wait even longer for those still owed?

Where does one find the pennies to buy a loaf of bread, a tea bag or a pound of sugar? Where does one find the patience not to go insane? Where does one find the will not to *=>^?
