Premier attends CARICOM Conference in Jamaica

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley and Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Andrew Holness.

Dr Natalio Wheatley is attending the 49th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

The meeting runs from July 6 to 8 and is being chaired by the Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness. It focuses on regional security, food and nutrition security, and climate change under the theme, “People, Partnerships, Property: Promoting a Secure and Sustainable Future.”

Dr Wheatley said the Virgin Islands remains committed to regional collaboration. “We are happy to collaborate with our Caribbean neighbours, so that together we can find solutions to food security and the concerns of climate change, topics which are so important in our agenda of priority matters,” he stated.

“This partnership affords us the opportunity to exchange ideas and learn from other countries about what they are doing to improve these areas,” Dr Wheatley explained.

During his absence from July 5 to 9, Communication and Works Minister Kye Rymer has been appointed to act as Premier, Minister of Finance, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sustainable Development, and Minister for Financial Services, Economic Development and Digital Transformation.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change Julian Fraser is also away during the same period.

The BVI government said it remains committed to the overall development of the territory through collaboration with other countries.

CARICOM meetings have given the Virgin Islands a platform to engage on regional strategies in education, energy resilience, and disaster response, particularly following hurricanes Irma and Maria. The BVI holds Associate Member status in CARICOM, which allows it to participate in policy discussions, although it does not have voting rights.

This year’s meeting is expected to set a roadmap for collective action on key challenges facing the Caribbean region, including the rising cost of food, the impact of climate change on small island states, and regional crime prevention.

MAybe if we spent $1,000,000,000.00 on extending the runway we could finally get direct flights to Jamaica. Ha ha.
It is not much money after all.

VIslanders have hardly noticed the disappearance of $3,000,000,000.00 ($3Billion) over the last 8 years. Who going to miss another $1,000,000,000.

Of course we won’t end up with a runway extention, but this time we may notice the $1,000,000,000.00 debt.

But we still wont be able to fly direct to Jamaica.

    Lesson number 1.

We were a part of the Federation of the West Indies.
The big WI countries broke up the Federation because it was believed that the small island people would have migrated to the big islands and become a liability to the big islands. Table turned, and the small islands economy booming. We have 150 different nationalities here including from the 4 big Caribbean states. Pray for our country.
