Premier backs Guyana in ongoing border dispute with Venezuela

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has thrown his support behind Guyana as that country remains embroiled in a border dispute with Venezuela.

Venezuela and Guyana are currently in a dispute over an oil-rich area called Essequibo. The international community has signalled that they support Guyana’s claims to the land.

But Venezuela is moving forward with plans to annex the area following a referendum in which their people voted for this option.

At a recent press conference, Premier Wheatley called on Venezuela to respect Guyana’s rights to the land and to refrain from taking actions that will destabilize the region.

“We already see what’s taking place in other regions of the world, with all the challenges we have as humanity, we don’t need those challenges in the particular region,” the Premier said. “I would call on our commitment to humanity to prevail as it pertains to territorial disputes.”

The Premier also said he stands in solidarity with Guyana and as the BVI is an associate member of CARICOM, the leader also supported their statement which backed Guyana in the ongoing dispute.

Recently, the BVI moved to strengthen ties with Guyana, announcing that it will drop visa restrictions for those nationals which make up the largest group of expatriates in the community.

Guyana is currently enjoying regional and international attention as they have found oil reserves within their borders and are poised to become a major global oil economy in the near future.

Why don’t you go hold and vote in another referendum and claim ownership of Brazil, and Colombia and while you at it throw in Florida and annex that state as yours. You can always invent some bs to say how the Pope and the King of Spain shafted you out of those places.

When a leader is losing his power and appears weak to his tribe the leader’s best remedy is to commence hostilities against another tribe. This ‘war’ tactic has been repeated among humans for the last 20K+ years. In 2023 this tactic is flourishing all around the globe.

  9. Peace / Greed says:

Venezuela has always been trying to claim Essequibo but lost everytime because the matter was settled legally and fairly over 300 years ago. What they’re not saying is they already got a piece of Guyana’s land. If you look at historical maps from over 400 years ago, you’ll see Guyana was much bigger. Venezuela has always been chipping away at Guyana’s land. This is nothing but greed from Maduro, a man who will start a war one of the most peaceful nations on the planet. Maduro will stop at no lengths to spread his propaganda, steal and screw over his people. He should feel ashamed. He should invest his time and money taking care of Venezuelans and ensuring their wellbeing over trying to steal what’s not his. People like Maduro is why the world can’t have peace.
