Premier declares unwavering commitment to fighting crime

Premier Wheatley.

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has expressed a strong commitment to addressing the issue of escalating crime that has been affecting the territory in recent months.

Dr Wheatley gave that indication during a press recent briefing where he told members of the media that, although the Virgin Islands is one of the safest places in the world, persons are rightly concerned when they see brazen acts of violence carried out within the community.

Premier Wheatley alluded to the recent daylight robbery at the Cyril B Romney Tortola Pier Park as well as some of the broad daylight murders that have been happening, particularly those involving young men in his constituency, as prime examples of this violence.

“I remain committed as Minister of Finance to supporting the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force in their fight against crime. My commitment is unwavering there,” Dr Wheatley said.

The Premier emphasised the significance of prevention over cure and highlighted his government’s investments in sports, youth activities, reducing unemployment, and supporting social development to resist crime.

He said these efforts will be central to the anti-violence strategy, and urged collective action at the family, community, and territorial levels.

The territory’s leader argued that, although crime is a worldwide phenomenon, every society must be prepared and equipped to confront it. He further contended that addressing the crime situation is a task that requires the involvement of every segment of society.

Premier Wheatley, while heaping praise on the police force, Customs and Immigration departments, said he takes his role extremely seriously as a member of the National Security Council.

Dr Wheatley expressed pride in the support that his government has offered to law enforcement over the years and promised to place additional resources within those departments.
