Premier defensive: 30,000 can do the cleanup!

Premier Dr D Orlando Smith has defended a decision to not have a British vessel assist in the recovery process following widespread flooding and landslides, adding that the 30,000 residents and citizens of the British Virgin Islands (BVI) should get the job done.

While making that declaration, he essentially said the territory does not need the 400 crew members aboard the Royal Navy vessel RFA Mounts Bay, which is in the Caribbean, and which had offered to assist.

“30,000 BVIslanders and residents versus 400 British crew taking care of our territory. Let’s all show our BVI pride!” Premier Smith said in a Facebook post.

He also claims that a report carried by BVI News Online that the British ship was ‘turned back’ is inaccurate. Another news entity is reporting that the ship was ‘rejected’.

Premier Smith used different words that seem to amount to the very report he said is inaccurate – that the ship was turned back.
