Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has expressed excitement at recent updates with the Prospect Reef Development, which is aimed at diversifying the tourism and business landscape of the territory.

The government has recently unveiled the establishment of the Prospect Reef Board, revitalising the project after a period of dormancy.

Now, plans are afoot to convert the property into a state-of-the-art, five-star branded hotel resort, complete with extensive conference facilities.

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley suggested the ambitious project marks a turning point for the business community in Road Town and across the BVI, promising to facilitate a wide range of meetings, conventions, and events.

“We’re happy that we would have finally, after a long period of time, gotten the board together. And their first order of business is to put out a request for proposal for a five-star branded hotel resort which would include conference facilities,” the Premier told reporters at a recent press conference.

The Prospect Reef development is envisioned to accommodate a large number of guests, catering to the needs of the international business community and promoting economic growth.

One of the key components of this initiative is the enhancement of local infrastructure to support the influx of business tourism. This includes significant improvements to the airport, allowing for direct flights from major cities such as Miami, New York and Atlanta, Dr Wheatley indicated.

Premier Wheatley commented that the introduction of a flight from Miami has already made a noticeable impact, and said further expansion is expected to bolster the BVI’s connectivity with the global market.

The new resort will not only serve as a luxurious destination for tourists but also as a vital facility for hosting international business gatherings, including arbitrations and board meetings for companies domiciled in the BVI.

This aligns with the government’s strategy to strengthen the economic substance of the territory by providing top-notch amenities for business operations.

As anyone who has dealt with branded 5* resorts will know, they do not put money in to build the facility. Instead, they operate the management of an existing facility, built to their quality standards. So, the big question for government is, Who is going to pay to build the resort? Government doesn’t have the money so what is the plan?

How many 5* branded resorts are there in the Caribbean without beaches, and opposite an office block and car show room?

The guests can enjoy themselves in the quaint bars and restaurents of Duff’s Bottom in the evening.

A hotel? Right there? With no beach? Who would spend that amount of money to go there when the Caribbean dream is about beautiful beaches? They tried before and it didn’t work.
Turn it into something useful for the community. Rebuilding the swimming pool means we could teach every BVI child to swim. The marina means we could teach them sailing and boat skills. The other buildings mean we could teach hospitality, catering, etc. AND have your conferences.
Don’t make a hotel that will go through the same cycle all over again. Make it an education, cultural and sports centre help make a better future for our people.

  17. PLEASE STOP THIS ARROGACE says:

Stop this politicians playing with our money.
They think they can do a hospital, and it takes them 14 years and 3 times more money than planned.
They think they can do a cruise ship park and mess up a zero cost deal with disney, promess to do it better for 20 milion usd and end up spending more than 90.
Decide to build some social housing, and end up building luxury condos nobody can afford wasting millions of social security money.
If we let them, Prospect reef is going to be another money pit feeding the arrogance of arrogant politicians with dreams of egyptians architecs.
Lease the property or sell it to some developer from the private sector. to develop under their own risk.

  18. Anonymous says:

The government should never have bought the property in the first place, but having said that, they should have done SOMETHING with it since the NDP bought it in 2005. All succesive governments have let it languish for nearly 20 years! It’s a joke … not to mention an eyesore.

Any attempt to turn it into a “luxury resort” would be futile and will end up costing the taxpayers even more.

It is on a piece of very valuable and very sellable land. It should be sold to the highest bidder for a high end residential condo community with each condo assigned their own private boat slip. The existing buildings are worthless after so many years of neglect, and should be demolished.

Government should NOT be in the resort business. Full stop. That property should be earmarked as a destination PARK with wedding, banquet, and convention facilities, a world class spa, a “luxury” swimming pool, perhaps a small but high end casino?, a real children’s playground with a proper “kiddie pool”, lovely gardens, a couple of really good restaurants, a proper and permanent bandstand, etc.

It should be a BUSY place with something happening all the time. It should be a place that locals and visitors alike can enjoy. It should be a showcase for BVI hospitality.

It should NOT be operated by government or any government appointed board. It needs to be owned and operated by professionals who KNOW what they are doing.

  23. Ummm HELLO says:

This is so dumb, as other commenters have noted… Prospect reef & surrounding areas are not adequate for a 5 star hotel. There are far better things that could be done with that space. What about multiple public pools? Including a shallow splash pad for little children? A water park, a trampoline park, a rock climbing wall etc etc things for kids to do that involve being active? Stop worrying about everyone else and put some love into your community.

Does this guy even know how much resources isn’t required to get this establishment up? Hollywood?
