Premier: Plans afoot to address crime surge
Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has outlined steps to address the growing concerns over crime in the territory.
Speaking during the government’s first press conference of 2025, Dr Wheatley acknowledged the recent rise in violent crime, including the territory’s first murder of the year, and assured the public of a strategic response to tackle the issue.
“We do have an upsurge, in some areas, of crime. Last year we had four murders, which is down about maybe two or three persons from the previous years,” he said. “We want to bring murders down to zero… and the police has a strategy to be able to deal with those.”
The Premier expressed condolences to the family of the murder victim, describing the incident as “not a good way to start the year”. He noted an increase in gun-related violence and stated that discussions on the matter have been prioritised within the National Security Council (NSC).
“I met with the National Security Council yesterday, as I do every week, received updates from the Acting Police Commissioner, and of course, we continue to strategise on ways in which we can confront this challenge in the community of crime,” Dr Wheatley said.
Strengthening legislation was highlighted as a key focus of the government’s response. The Premier referenced recent laws passed in the House of Assembly, including the Police Amendment Act and the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Bill, which will bolster law enforcement’s ability to combat crime. “We will continue to strengthen legislation along with many other strategies to confront the challenge of crime,” he added.
However, the Premier stressed that addressing crime requires public involvement. He urged residents to support law enforcement efforts by sharing information that could aid investigations. “The public has a role to play, so if you see something, say something,” he emphasised. Residents were encouraged to contact the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force or use the Crime Stoppers hotline to report incidents anonymously.
The rise in crime has prompted concerns among community members and business owners. There have been calls for enhanced police visibility and improved resources to tackle organised crime groups operating in the territory. The NSC has reportedly been analysing these trends to ensure a robust response.
In addressing broader security concerns, Premier Wheatley acknowledged support from the United Kingdom, which has been instrumental in providing resources to the local police force. “The governor and his national security advisors have analysed some of the areas where there’s needed support in the police force, and they’ve gotten some resources to deal with that.”

The only solutions.
But on another note, the premier bit off more than he can chew, every day is a next problem in the news and his only solutions is “I working on it”.
No confidence in this man to even boil water at this point, he going let it dry up.
That if the government wanted to end crime they would take the steps needed. However, they continue to p#$$¥f●●+ around. Is crime only NOW getting out of hand? All those who were gunned down would say different if they could speak from the grave…sons, daughters, uncle, aunt and even grandmothers were gunned down during the years and we wouldn’t get into the murder of the innocent child.
