Premier promises engagement with Anegada residents amid concerns

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has pledged to enhance engagement with Anegada residents following concerns about a proposed road closure during the upcoming Lobster Fest this weekend.

The Premier acknowledged the need for improved communication and committed to addressing the community’s issues.

During a recent press conference, a reporter highlighted that Anegada residents are worried about a bulletin circulating that the main road from the dock to the roundabout will be closed to traffic, except for essential workers, during the Annual Lobster Festival over the weekend. This closure could disrupt access to businesses, particularly those offering rentals in the area.

Engagement

Premier Wheatley admitted he was not previously aware of the issue but assured residents he would relay their concerns to the Minister of Communications and Works.

“I know that there are various issues that the residents of Anegada are displeased with. I have promised them that I will engage with them more,” he stated.

The Premier apologised for the lack of prior engagement and expressed his intention to visit Anegada beyond the Lobster Fest event to thoroughly listen to residents’ concerns.

“They are important to us. I don’t want them to feel as though they do not have a voice,” he stated. “And there are a number of issues that they seem to be displeased with, and I want to be there to support them, along with the district representative and all the ministers and junior ministers of government.”

Challenges

Dr Wheatley’s commitment comes amid ongoing challenges faced by Anegada residents. Earlier this year, it was reported that no funds were allocated in the 2024 budget for road repairs on Anegada, despite government plans to rehabilitate 38 miles of roads across the territory. Minister Kye Rymer explained that although funds were requested for Anegada’s roadworks, none were appropriated, leaving residents to continue dealing with deteriorating road conditions.

Additionally, in December 2023, a fire tender was removed from Anegada’s Auguste George Airport, leading to its abrupt closure. The fire truck was relocated to Virgin Gorda due to mechanical issues with their equipment, causing significant inconvenience to Anegada residents. Minister Rymer later apologised for the disruption and assured that the fire tender had been returned, allowing the airport to reopen.
