Premier slammed for keeping governor waiting in HOA

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has come under fire for keeping Governor Daniel Pruce waiting for nearly 40 minutes during the recent House of Assembly (HOA) throne speech.

The throne speech, delivered by the Governor, outlines the government’s legislative agenda for the upcoming year. The delay, which occurred earlier this month, sparked criticism from Opposition members, who accused the Premier of showing a lack of respect for the legislative process and the office of the Governor.

Sixth District Representative Myron Walwyn raised the issue during a recent press conference held by the Opposition. He described the Premier’s tardiness as part of a broader pattern of behaviour demonstrating a lack of respect for the House of Assembly and its proceedings.

“The last throne speech, the Governor’s people were there. He had the Governor waiting almost 40 minutes for him to arrive so the Governor can give the throne speech,” Walwyn told reporters. He added that this behaviour reflects poorly on the Premier’s understanding of his responsibilities as a legislator.

Walwyn also criticised the Premier for his government’s handling of legislative matters, including introducing bills to the House. He accused the government of failing to adequately scrutinise legislation before it reaches the House, leading to delays and confusion.

“They are not reading the bills before they come to the House of Assembly,” Walwyn asserted. He explained that this lack of preparation has resulted in poorly drafted bills being brought forward, requiring significant amendments during the legislative process.

Premier Wheatley defended Walwyn’s accusation recently, arguing that the House was the most appropriate place to address deficiencies in legislation.

The Opposition has repeatedly called for greater accountability and respect for the legislative process. Walwyn emphasised that the Premier’s primary duty is to the House of Assembly. “Nobody voted him to be Premier. Nobody voted him to be Minister of Finance. You were voted first to be a member of the House of Assembly, and that is where your power is derived from,” he argued.

The Premier has not yet publicly addressed the criticism regarding his tardiness or the broader concerns raised by the opposition.

The incident has added to growing tensions between the government and the opposition as both sides debate key issues affecting the territory.

The Speech from the Throne needs to be discontinued, we are in f^*king 2025. What’s the purpose of our own Government putting their agenda on paper for a UK visitor to read to us as if he is doing something for us? Let the Government govern and let the Governor do what he came here to do.
