Progress made in home invasion assault case, police say

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) announced significant progress in the investigation of a distressing home invasion that occurred on June 5 in Slaney Hill, Tortola. Two men, reportedly armed with knives, broke into a residence, assaulted the housemaid, and fled with stolen items.

Commissioner Mark Collins shared that the breakthrough came after diligent police work that led to a search at a property in Purcell Estate, Tortola.

“On Sunday, June 9, 2024, we executed a search on a property at Purcell Estate, Tortola, and recovered some of the items that were stolen from the residence.  A suspect was also arrested at the same property.” Commissioner Collins stated.

The case has caused considerable concern among residents, especially given the violent nature of the crime. The police are still seeking more information and have called on anyone knowledgeable about the incident to come forward.

Police said every piece of information, no matter how seemingly insignificant, could help advance the ongoing investigation.

The home invasion is part of a troubling rise in criminal activity in the territory. Earlier incidents include a similar burglary attempt in Brandywine Bay, where police arrested a 21-year-old suspected of multiple home invasions.

This latest arrest brings a measure of relief to the community but also underscores the challenges facing law enforcement as they grapple with a spike in violent crimes across the territory. The RVIPF has reassured the public and the victims that the investigation is proceeding with the utmost diligence and care.

The RVIPF has urged the community to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity. The Crime Stoppers line is available at 800-8477 (TIPS) or for those overseas at 1-284-800-8477. The RVIPF Intelligence Unit can also be reached at 368-9339. All information provided will be treated confidentially.

I agree that the punishment needs to be harsh for these criminals, but the article doesn’t mention rape – it says assault, not sexual assault.

The police should wait until they visit your house, if you live somewhere, before they try to find them. Someone should rescue your phone or computer from you.
