Public feedback invited on Human Rights Commission Bill

Deputy Governor David Archer, Jr.

The government is calling on residents to participate in the development of the Human Rights Commission Bill, 2024. The bill proposes establishing a dedicated commission to investigate complaints, promote awareness, and champion human rights.

This new body would consist of five human rights commissioners, ensuring equal representation for men and women. Additionally, at least one commissioner would reside on a Sister Island, reflecting the territory’s diversity.

The Commission’s powers would include receiving and investigating complaints of potential human rights violations. They would also play a crucial role in raising public awareness and understanding of human rights, including international instruments and activities.

The Commission could also make public statements on matters affecting human rights, encouraging greater understanding and compliance with relevant laws and the Virgin Islands Constitution.

“Your opinion and feedback matters and is essential to the legislative process,” Deputy Governor David Archer Jr said. “As such, it is important for members of the public to read through the contents of the Bill and provide their valued perspectives so that we may collectively shape the future of the Virgin Islands.”

The public is invited to access the Bill and provide feedback at the government’s website. Alternatively, residents can email the Deputy Governor’s Office at [email protected] with any questions.

Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Deputy Governor Sharleen Dabreo-Lettsome stated, “Human rights is a keystone concept for good governance. This Bill will allow the Virgin Islands to be in line with international standards and expectations as a modern, democratic society.”

OK but what about topics we locals deem to be a human right? Whats the point in adding to the discussion when you all will do whatever your told already and not from the demands of the people.

  2. Sir, says:

What more feed back do you need more than you have already received relative to paying increments owed to those that have earned them, need them and are suffering without them, such as civil servants retirees?

Is feedback needed to grow a conscience and will to do the right thing by the people for the people? Is feedback needed to be righteous and Godly to people who deserve what they have worked for for decades?

Is feedback needed to watch the top tier of government officials shower themselves in money, perks and retirement benefits while everyone else on them iddle to bottom suck salt?

It is a disgrace the suffering policy makers are creating within the lives of so many. A total shame.
