Public servants are likely to hear good news about their salaries and benefits in under a year as the long-awaited Public Service Compensation Review is set to be completed in nine months.

The review will be done by the auditing firm Pricewaterhousecoopers, Trinidad & Tobago.

Speaking at a launch event, the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Deputy Governor, Sharleen DaBreo-Lettsome said the government signed the contract on September 27, 2022, and reiterated that the cost of the review is $302,103.

She said the review is expected to modernize the government’s compensation system by producing a “classification system based on competencies and not just classification and grade.”

It is also expected to create “a total rewards scheme based on base pay and variable pay such as allowances, performance bonuses and other benefits.”

DaBreo also said the Public Service Compensation Review will recommend how public sector jobs can keep pace with inflation and market value in the future.

A steering group comprising members of the public sector has also been assigned to work alongside the reviewers and provide feedback on behalf of civil servants.

The government as well as public servants have long expressed the need for improved compensation in government. Many leave the public service for better salaries and benefits in the local private sector as well as in Canada, the US and the United Kingdom.

should also be considered to remove the weak civil servants and only promote the competent civil servants. Military usually does it in a 2 year promotion cycle. If not promoted for 6 years then the person is discharged.

The Military promotion cycle sounds great, on paper. However, for that to work in the local government this first requires promotional outlets to allow such a system to work.

Surely unwelcome news for the civil service jobsworths..

  3. Island peep says:

There’s no justification for any pay increases in the public sector yet. First, weed out the corrupt and incompetent employees. Then impose efficiencies in how departments work. Only then can any pay increases be given to those who truly work in the public’s interest. For those who fail these standards, they can try and join the private sector – there are plenty of jobs presently undertaken by “down-islanders” on permits which you could do – cleaning, waiting tables, etc. If you can’t or won’t do these jobs, then you don’t deserve any help. Being “born here” is no guarantee of income for life.

  4. Messenger says:

Well I can’t wait for when they reach Public Works because they have a lady who drives a white jeep all she do is drive through town day in day out in some old run down slippers and old clothes claiming she running errands but all she doing is wasting gas and telling by standers she doing runs for the Department when they have a pool of messengers and still collecting a salary they have a lot of people on payroll there but have no accountability for works done the confirmed Director has a lot on his hands because these people ain’t working for we hard earned monies………..

  5. DON'T hold your breath says:

The majority WILL NOT benfit from this review. At the end of the day, those who making money will continue to do so and those who don’t will not see an increase. I do not mean to pop your bubble but this is just the way it is.

  6. Pensions says:

I hope they propose that the Government employees contribute towards their Government pensions rather than just be “given” a pension (on top of their Social Security pension they receive at the age of 65).
For most pension schemes the employer matches a proportion of whatever the employee contributes.

  7. ok says:

All they need to do is let the pensioners go from Age 60 to make room for the young people with their skills and diplomas to be able to come in and those in to be promoted. Modernized the government. old school and all that paper is not fitting in with today’s business world.

  8. Since says:

before NDP, but including that “club,” increments have been over due, plus over due.

How much longer Lord!?! Thee obvious, given the enormous of spending taken place since VIP became the government is a stupendous amount.

Meanwhile, people are barely getting by with their mouths closed but belly empty, and a daily rise in animosity. The whip will break very soon as people will not continue to be disadvantaged. while a few live real good. People are tired. Since early 2000 and people can’t get what they work for yet.

When people had enough of the shite, there will no street unoccupied and no job being attended. The people will rise up in their anger and rebel and shut the whole country down.

When will enough exploitation be enough? When will the least fortunate needs be taken into consideration.

Government/elected leaders, Will you wait until the revolution starts, or will you be proactive and do right by the people.

The people are looking on in silence, but their temperature is slowly rising.

  9. local firm says:

Another contract gone to pwc in trinidad.
Were any local firms invited to bid?
Waiting for their a$$e$ when they come to ask to donations, beg for jobs for unsuitable constituents or serve on some board or committee.

  10. Jah says:
