Public service concerns on ROI bill to be addressed — Deputy Gov
Deputy Governor David Archer Jr has assured public servants that concerns regarding the Register of Interest (Amendment) Bill, 2024 are being heard.
The Civil Service Association recently expressed concerns in a letter to Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley over the amendments. They said more discussions and clear instructions are needed so people can follow the law easily and avoid problems.
Contrary to recent suggestions, Archer said significant efforts were made to keep public servants informed and gather feedback. This began with a presentation on January 16 to department heads most affected by the proposed changes.
Archer said feedback on the proposed amendments was welcomed from the beginning and expected and stated that the level of engagement remains constant.
Archer said after consultations, all public officers were invited to comment via email, however, only one responded.
He noted that the proposed changes to the law were also discussed at a special meeting with department heads. They were shown details of the principal Act and the suggested changes that could affect them. Later in January, a special meeting in the House of Assembly allowed for more questions, which the Attorney General answered. The law was then officially presented again on March 7.
The Deputy Governor’s office acknowledged new concerns raised by the Civil Service Association and said it is committed to addressing them. Public consultation remains open until March 29, and officers are encouraged to submit feedback.
The Acting Governor emphasised the importance of public participation in good governance. He urged public officers to contact the Office of the Deputy Governor with any questions and to check their emails for further information on the bill.
