Rajah Smith joins Progressives United as At-Large candidate, outlines plans

Smith

Businessman Rajah Smith has joined the slate of candidates on the Progressives United ticket for the February 25 general elections.

Smith joins the Julian Fraser-led team as a Territorial At-Large candidate.

He was announced as the political party’s newest candidate at a Progressives United rally in Huntums Ghut on Saturday.

Giving an overview of his plans if elected into office, Smith said he will work to restore the local agricultural industry and push consumer protection as one of the first bills to come to the House of Assembly after the elections.

“It’s time we preserve not reserve our Virgin Islanders. It’s time we put these Virgin Islands first,” Smith said.

The At-Large candidate added: “I will work hard to fix domestic issues such as roads, regular water supply, and jobs for our people — jobs for our young people.”

He also has hopes of implementing environmental protection policies and renaming the annual Farmer’s Week the ‘Honourable Delores Christopher Farmer’s and Culture Week’.

Smith’s inclusion on Progressives United brings the number of candidates on that party’s ticket to five.

The others are businesswoman Stephanie Brewley who is contesting the First Electoral District, party leader Fraser who is seeking re-election in the Third District, and former legislator Dr Vincent Scatliffe who will be vying to re-take his seat in Fourth Electoral District.

Former Customs officer, Dirk Walters will be contesting the Fifth District.

The party needs at least seven candidates to stand a chance of becoming the government. More candidates are expected to join the team.

No surprise here. I was always of the opinion that he would join the PU, since the PU seems to be having challenges filling out its slate. Well, may it is waiting until the 11th hour to spring/turn loose some surprises. Ok. In listening to a host of campaign speeches, it seems that nuff candidates running with a party are freelancing in advocating that “I” will do this and “I” will do that. Does the parties have a platform and should candidates not be fleshing out that platform?
