Real-world data shows AstraZeneca effective against Delta variant
A study published on Wednesday has shown that two doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine — which is available in the BVI — are nearly as effective against the highly transmissible Delta variant of COVID-19 as they are against the previously dominant Alpha variant.
These findings also apply to the Pfizer vaccine which is accessible to residents able to travel to the neighbouring US Virgin Islands to get the jab.
The findings of the study, which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, are based on real-world data.
The study found that two doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine were 67 percent effective against the Delta variant and 74.5% effective against the Alpha variant.
As for Pfizer, two shots of that vaccine were 88 percent effective at preventing the symptomatic disease from the Delta variant, compared to 93.7% against the Alpha variant.
“Only modest differences in vaccine effectiveness were noted with the Delta variant as compared with the Alpha variant after the receipt of two vaccine doses,” Public Health England researchers wrote in the study.
While noting that the vaccines are highly effective against the Delta variant — now said to be the dominant variant worldwide — researchers made it clear that one shot of the vaccines is not enough for high protection.
Though yet to be confirmed, local health officials believe the COVID-19 Delta variant is in the BVI and is the cause of the dozens of deaths and thousands of positive cases recorded locally in recent weeks.

To those who say this is being done for profit. The vaccine we have here was developed by Oxford University. Oxford then went to the big pharma companies and asked them who would produce and distribute the vaccine FOR NO PROFIT. Only Astra Zeneca volunteered. So a dose of Astra Zeneca costs $2 per shot .
The Pfizer vaccine was developed in Germany by a private company. They and Pfizer sell the vaccine for profit , it’s $20 per shot.
It is very expensive to go through the testing to sell drugs in the USA. Astra Zeneca would get no reward for doing so because they are committed to sell at no profit. Astra Zeneca cannot keep up with demand for their drug in the rest of the world. So much so that the EU are suing them for under supply. The US has enough home produced drugs. So Astra Zeneca is concentrating on supplying the rest of the world and not trying to get approval in the USA.
Oxford also designed a drug that can be used in less developed countries because it does not need to be deep frozen as do Pfizer and Moderna. It is doubtful whether in BVI we have the infrastructure to use the drugs which need to be deep frozen.

All government workers should be made to get the vaccine or risk suspension without pay, then termination if they still refuse.
All private companies should be made to get all their workers vaccinated or be ordered to closed. The companies can then fire the workers who refuse to vaccinate and hire ones who are willing.
Issue free movement cards. Only those who are fully vaccinated should be issued a free movement card 3 weeks after their second shot. All other person should be subjected to 24 hour lock down during any covid surges.

yes, Smh. people don’t realize we are’t solving the underlying issue here by just giving people vaccines. The underlying root causes of why people are getting sick is because of diet. Many People today are unhealthy and are constantly consuming immune suppressing compounds. It is in the food people!! How come we haven’t taken all the poison processed food off the shelves? How come the world governments aren’t talking about a healthy diet to prevent the infection of covid? administering vaccines is like putting a bandaid over the hole in our sinking ship. Every time a unhealthy, immune suppressed person takes the vaccine; covid will mutate and change its physical structure rendering the current vaccine ineffective and we/everyone will have to take a new updated vaccine every time a mutation of the virus surfaces. But if we do not address the root cause of this issue which is indeed diet and exposure to pollutants then we will only continue to face more and more pandemics in the future. Then you got to say the vaccine is fighting the virus. Vaccines don’t fight the virus, the inoculate our immune system with a inactive 3-dimensional structure of the virus so that our immune system can recognize it and produce antibodies(macrophages) that then fight the virus. Also if I am naturally immune/asymptomatic then by your words i must have a lower viral load and much lower chance of infecting someone else because my own immune system has naturally suprressed the virus with my very own macrophages (white blood cells). The reason why covid is mutating and getting stronger and stronger is because unhealthy, sick immune suppressed people are taking the vaccine thinking it will cure all their problems yet it doesn’t and then the virus just mutates its 3-dimensional structure through natural selection and survival of the fittest and then reinfects its hosts because that persons immune system is too weak to produce antibodies because that person is NOT consuming the right food/micronutrients and minerals to fuel the immune system properly in the first place. Hence why the AZ vaccine is only 74.5% effective. Just because people are not taking the vaccines doesn’t mean that it is causing a super variant. CHlorox, Antibacterial soap, hand sanitizers, antibiotics create super variants of bacteria, viruses and any other pathogens.
if you took a microscope to your skin you find that their are more microorganisms living on our bodies than the entire amount of cells we have in our body. Stop Pushing other peoples narratives like they are your own. There are viruses all around us yet we don’t get sick because are natural immune system we inherited from our ancestors evolving for thousands have years is all the defense we need. When a vaccinated and unvaccinated person catches COVID, because of the vaccine fighting the virus, the viral load (this means the actual amount or concentration of the virus in your blood) is much lower in the vaccinated person. Lower viral load means you have a much lower chance of infecting someone else. THIS IS HOW YOU STOP COVID: BY LIMITING ITS ABILITY TO INFECT AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE. It becomes more resilient (i.e. it becomes harder to kill) each time it passes on because it learns more about us, and gets stronger…that’s why we have the Delta variant today.

If you have blood clotting issues, talk to your doctor about the vaccine. Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Obesity and old age are none of the demographics that the vaccine can potentially harm. EVERYBODY ELSE: you have no excuse but fear and holding out because “it’s your choice”. The vaccine causes the immune system to produce antibodies in advance of the virus. When the virus arrives the body is already equipped with a means of fighting it. But it takes up to two weeks to produce the antibodies.
If the virus arrives in an unvaccinated body the immune system also takes time to produce the antibodies. Meanwhile while it is doing so ,the virus is growing and multiplying. So unvaccinated people have many times more virus in their bodies than vaccinated people.
That is why they get sicker and die. And that it why they transmit the virus more easily than vaccinated people. Because they carry more virus in their bodies.

it’s hard to go through the agony of thought, I know, but your mistake is to confuse percentages with numbers. Covid hospitalisation is massively down in UK due to the high vaccine takeup, but of this smaller number, the percentage of vaccinated hospital cases is bound to increase as the infections move to younger people. If there had been a 100% vaccine takeup, it would be a minute absolute number, but then 100% of Covid admissions would have been vaccinated. Think about it.
If 80% of the country is vaccinated then 60% of the people going into hospital, to get a broken leg fixed for example, are likely to be vaccinated.
