Retire and report derelict vehicles!

Following an earlier announcement that the government will be ramping up efforts to remove derelict vehicles, the Waste Management Department is urging persons to retire their derelicts and report those they may see in their communities.

Director of the Waste Management Department, Marcus Solomon, announced the ‘retire your ride’ derelict removal campaign to encourage residents to become part of the effort to beautify the territory for the comfort of residents and visitors.

“Over the next couple weeks we want the residents of Virgin Gorda as well as Tortola to retire their derelict rides as well as help us to identify derelicts throughout the community,” Solomon said.

He said the aim is to get as many derelicts and scrap mental off the street by September 15 to facilitate export on September 18, 2023.

“Together, it is our responsibility to keep our community clean and green but everyone needs to do their part. We are asking you to help us help the community,” the director said.

The community is urged to identify derelicts on private and public property and contact the Waste Management Department at 876-494-4934 or via the BVIGovReportit app.

Persons are advised to record location information and submit to the department or via the app accompanied with a photo where applicable. When the report is received, an officer will travel to the location, identify the vehicle(s) and issue a notice appropriate to the location.

“The notice is completed in triplicates, the original is affixed to the derelict or can be handed to the owner and two copies remain with the department. Vehicles on public property have a duration of 14 days and private property have 21 days before the notice expires,” Solomon explained.

The director said when the notice expires and the vehicle remains at the same location, the department’s wrecker operator or hired operator will remove the derelict from the location and have it transported to the temporary site at Pockwood Pond.

You would need a helicopter to find the thousands of them. Enforcement is the only solution.

  2. Nature's little secret says:

is that some auto repair shops in the BVI have a monopoly on derelict vehicles that ‘decorate’ their premises.

  8. I ❤️ this! says:

There are about five of them on Horse Path main road, and one piece of an old red bus which was battered by hurricane Irma further up the road across from the man pig pen, which is a total eye sore. If we claim here is a tourist destination, we really need to do better, man.

  9. Nice try says:

Nothing will really happen hear as most bvi landers are hoarders and will never give up their trash.

  10. Concerned 1 says:

Whatever happened to the person who had a government contract to remove all derelict vehicles and scrap iron in the BVI ? I heard that someone high up in waste management gave it to someone else, via word of mouth agreement for a heafty fee.

  11. Concerned 1 says:

The waste management heads, are not interested in upholding their written contract for the removal of the derelict vehicles and scrap from the BVI. Instead, their only interested in getting kickbacks from persons with no official contracts to do the same job.

  12. Don’t Bother! says:

Already reported derelict abandoned vehicles on the Government app 3 months ago and they still haven’t removed them! Don’t waste your time as they clearly are not interested in doing anything. The app and all the rubbish they spout is just another political deflection. They make it look like they are busy when they are stealing money out of the public register.

  13. ???? says:

Forget cars clean up them sunk boats and power boat on the side the road .
